Question about bump measurement

I'm a few days early and I apologize if this is a commonly asked question on this board, but I figured this board would would have more experience with this.  Yesterday at my check up, my bump had changed from 25 cm at my 22 week appointment to a 33 cm measurement at my 26 week appointment.   The MW actually measured twice to be certain about the length.  She said to just watch what I ate and make sure I was walking almost everyday, but that if I continued to grow like that, then they would be doing an ultrasound at my next appointment to check the size of LO.

So my question is, did anyone else have a sudden change in their bump, but then not change much the next few weeks or did it just keep growing?  Also, on average how much should it be changing from week to week.  I tried google, but I couldn't find a clear black and white average.  Maybe I wasn't searching with the right words.  This is my first pregnancy so I have nothing to compare it to.  Thanks,

Re: Question about bump measurement

  • I've never had my bump measured (last time OR this time)... I wouldn't really stress about it too much unless I was told specifically that "there is a problem".

  • Fundal height is roughly supposed to match what week you're at. I was 29 when they measured yesterday. It's really not a great indication of anything since bump shape and size changes as LO moves up and down and rolls around. Some places do put a lot of importance on those measurements, though. I believe if they're really off they may do a growth u/s to make sure nothing is going on with LO's growth, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • I have been 34 the past two weeks, but my doctor hasn't seemed concerned or anything because its remaining contstant. Sure freaks me out though when I've been right on the ball!

  • I think that the general rule of thumb is that the measurement usually comes pretty close to matching the number of weeks that you are. My doctor said that he isn't concerned as long as the measurement isn't +3 or -3 more than the number of weeks that I am. For example, it you are 33 weeks, generally you should measure around 33. My doctor says if you are 33 weeks you should measure between 30 (-3) and 36 (+3). I was measuring 3 ahead at 28 weeks and at 32 weeks everything had balanced out. I wouldn't worry about it for the time being. If your doctor or MW was that concerned, they would have performed an ultrasound that day. LO might have been having a growth spurt and thing will even out on their own. :)

  • They are talking about the fundal height, which is, generally speaking, pretty consistent among pregnant women, regardless of their weight. I have only gained 3 lbs this pregnancy, and I am measuring normally (27 cm at my 27 week check up). I measured small with my previous pregnancy (35 cm at 38 weeks) so they sent me in for an US to make sure the amniotic fluid was not leaking out. Seven cms bigger seems a little unusual. Have you been checked for gestational diabetes? IDK, I might want a second opinion if I were you. I don't know what your body size is, and if you are overweight (or obese) if that affects the fundal height (although my OB told me it didn't). If you trust your MW, than go with it, but if you have concerns, then you should get a second opinion. And get tested for GD, because it sounds like LO is a biggun, and that could be an indication of GD.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I don't have GD, I passed that test, I was average size pre pregnancy,  and what you guys said is right on what the MW said.  I'm hoping it's just a growth spurt and will level off since the extra weight seems to be causing RLP to be a lot more intense.

I am measuring 5.5weeks bigger. No biggie. I get growth scans ans such baby is only 58%. I think you are fine and it just goes to show you that it can be off depending on your body. Apparently mine likes to grow out and big.

This exactly. I just asked my Doctor out of curiosity last time I was there, which was 33 weeks and I was measuring at 33. He said they give you +/- 3, and anything within the range is normal.

    Not to worry!

  • I have been measuring a week ahead but in the ultrasound it showed extra fluid and that he is long. They aren't too concerned. So it could be for multiple possibilities.

  • I wouldn't let it bother me too much, especially if you are eating healthy for the most part and getting some activity.

I have 3 different doctors that I can make appts with (since they all might not be on call when I deliver) and at my 30 wk appt I measured 29, at my 32 wk appt I measure 36 (7 cm in 2 weeks? no way..and I gained less than a pound!), and then at mt 34 wk appt I was back to 33 & 1/2. Based on that info, I think diff doctors measure differently and it definitely taught me to only take the measurements with a grain of salt. I didn't change a thing or let it worry me at all...clearly something was off with their measurements!
