Maternity leave

Hello CT bumpies!

Could any of you share the details of your maternity leave from work...just as far as length of leave and whether pay was at 100% for the entire leave.  I work for a company that does not currently have short-term disability or a policy for maternity leave.  It is creating a policy now becasue of my pregnancy.  I was asked for my input, however this is my first pregnancy and I have no idea.  I would love to hear your experience so I can bring something to the table that is reasonable and customary in CT.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Maternity leave

  • Check out your employee handbook, there should be a section on FMLA - Family Medical Leave Act. In CT, as long as you have worked for 12 months and have contributed 1,000 hours in that 12 months you get up to 16 weeks of leave.

  • I stared working for an employer this past September and I am due in May 2012. I wouldn't qualify for FMLA and my company is a small family owned private school that also doesn't offer any type of short term disability. Not sure what/where I can go for any type of assistance? My husband has AFLAC so I was going to contact them. My employer suggested I look to see if CT has anything? Our annual household income is over 6 figures so I am assuming we wouldn't qualify for anything.

  • Connecticut has no disability or assistance programs for maternity leave. If you qualify for FMLA, then thats it, and its unpaid.

I have a STD plan from my employer (which I pay for bi weekly) that covers 6 weeks (no difference for vaginal or c section) at 60% of my pay.  I also have a 7 day waiting period so that means the first 7 days of me being out of work or not paid by the plan, but included under the 6 weeks.  If I want to get paid for those days, I need to use PTO. This seems to be relatively standard.

From my understanding, AFLAC is not offered through individual plans, it must be offered by your employer.  Also, you must be signed up and paying your premiums before even conceiving or it will not cover the pregnancy (whcih again, is pretty standard with any type of STD or things like this)

  • Thank you for the detailed reply! : D I figured there wasn't anything..so I will just save and plan for not getting paid during my maternity leave. : D
  • Where I work my maternity leave is only paid for the amount of benefit time I've banked.  And I will have to back pay my health insurance for the time I am out (some strange policy they have- no deductions while on leave).  I can take more time off but it will not be paid.

DH will take a paternity leave when I go back into work.

  • I work for a very large company and they offer 6 weeks maternity leave through their short term disability.  The pay while out depends on years at the company.  Initially anyone who works full time with benefits will receive 1/3 of their pay while on leave.  It slowly goes up to the max 100%, which you get at 5 years.  Vacation can also be added to this.

  • Thanks for your replies everyone.  I was beginning to think that mine would be one of those posts that 100 people view and no one responds. I'm thinking of setting up a meeting to talk about this and proposing 12 weeks (including vacation time) at full pay. Hope that's not gouging, but I'll be ready to negotiate with the company.  Wish me luck.

    Thanks!

I have the same.  It was a quite a shock to me, as I grew up in CA and assumed that paid materinity leave was the norm.

  • I got 1 week before due date, and then 7 weeks after paid 100%, then I saved vacation all year and it ended up being a total of 11 weeks. I have worked for my company which is a large corporation for 4 years so I qualified. You get an extra two weeks paid if you have a c-section but I delivered vaginally.
  • I'm from CA too. It's hard for me to believe that there is nothing in CT. My family doesn't seem to get it either. They keep asking if I'll be taking time off before labor, but that's not really an option when you have no benefits. Pretty rough.
