I was just reading your post about feeding below.
I'm sorry you are struggling. Reflux sucks beyond belief. Andrew (3) is still on prilosec, just got off meds for delayed gastric emptying, and also had to be on Nutramigen. he also needed OT feeding therapy because of major gagging issues, a swallowing disorder, and oral motor breakdown. Elliott had a milk protein allergy, too. I guess my point is, I've seen and been through what you're going through.
THAT said. I wanted to tell you something that I hope doesn't want to come off the wrong way. I hope it'll reassure you a little.
Is your LO's weight gain OK?
I ask, because you said she drinks 27 oz a day? That's a lot. At her age/size neither of my kids drank anywhere near that (about 20 oz) and they grew without concern. Elliott only now is drinking 22-26 oz a day and he is 18 lb. (and only 1 jar of baby food.) he is chubby and very healthy.
I also wanted to tell you I have tried every trick in the book with Andrew - severe reflux - to get him to eat more. singing sometimes worked, but, nothing changed it. Same with E.
your frustrations are normal, but, I just wanted to point out that 27 oz a day actually sounds really awesome for her size. I think babies can sense stress and frustration, so try to follow her lead, and never feel like you are force-feeding, I do believe it can create problems down the road. If you believe something else is wrong (in our case, delayed gastric emptying, swallowing disorder) approach your doctor and push for answers.
Re: lwmooney
I'm sorry, I just saw this! I wasn't on TB all weekend.
Her weight gain isn't that great. She's only about 13.5-14 lbs. Although, she's on the shorter side so it's proportioned well. The pedi keeps telling me she needs to have more ounces a day. They said 30+. I do have her on 24 cal Alimentum and I TRY to feed her solids twice a day. Right now, I'm lucky if she will eat solids once a day. She thinks it's fun now to blow food out by doing the "motor boat" thing with her mouth. She doesn't really care for solids much. It's kind of disheartening. I thought since she hated drinking her bottles, she would at least love solids...but she doesn't.
She was eating 24 cal of Alimentum powder and then the Ready To Feed about half the time. So that equaled out to about 22 cal. Now, I've stopped the Ready to Feed (she doesn't seem to care anymore...before she LOVED it) So, she's getting the 24 cal regularly, so I know she will eat a little less by default. I just wish the pedi would stop trying to compare her to regular standards. I also wish she were easier to feed!
She also projectile vomits usually at least once a day. It had stopped for a while but it's come back. I'm going to ask her GI if we can try the Prevacid Solutabs.
Thanks for your advice/concern. I"m glad to know I'm not alone in this. It's also nice to know that I'm not starving her by letting her eat just 25 ounces a day. She doesn't fall below 25 usually. Lately it's been between 25-28. She has her 9 month f/u at the end of this month, I'll see what they say then. Hopefully she will gain some weight!
