FB vent about Bumbo

A girl I went to high school is posting all over facebook how awful the Bumbo is and to never use them. She had her son sitting in the Bumbo on the kitchen counter while she was cooking and he fell off of the counter. Thankfully he only ended up with a broken leg.

I am sorry her son got hurt, but I really want to comment that they state not to use on elevated surfaces. She is aware of the recall, but then did it anyway and now is preaching all over facebook about the "recall". IMHO a recall should not have to be made over user error. If you chose to ignore the warning on the packaging and on the seat itself, then it is your fault. It has also been so widely publicized lately I just dont know how you miss it. From her posts she was aware about the recall, but I guess proceeded with the mentality that it wouldnt happen to her. From the pictures she has posted I can see the warning label on the seat.

I am really sorry her son got hurt, but it ticks me off that the injury could have been completely avoided.

Vent over!

  • Some people never want to pay attention to warning labels... And then throw a tantrum when the exact thing the warning label is in place for happens. My kiddo does just fine in the Bumbo... ON THE FLOOR. =)

I ignore one of the warnings on my straightener, it says to never use it while barefoot. If I ever burn my foot, I'm not going to complain about the straightener because I was a klutz! And it wouldn't be the first time I've done a little dance in the bathroom trying to avoid a hot curling iron or straightener!

  • Honestly I misused the bumbo a lot when A was little. Non of the warnings were out and I was still learning. That being said if my child fell off the counter I would have blamed myself and not the bumbo. The thing doesn't even have a seat belt for darn sake!

  • That is super awful that her baby got hurt, but I would feel kind of silly ranting about how awful the Bumbo is when the accident would have been avoided if they would have just read the warning...

That's like telling everyone not to drink Starbucks coffee anymore because you spilled it on yourself and it burned you even though it says right on the cup that it's hot.

  • People are stupid.  I'm not going to lie.  I use the Bumbo on the counter but I'm literally right in front of her and it's a rather deep counter...almost like an island.  I've never walked away or turned my back on her while she's on the counter.

On a related note: I just read the CPSC recall but why am I still seeing the seats sold in stores?

  • Someone really needs to reply to her that it is her fault that her son got hurt.  She just doesn't want to take the blame, but she has to know in her heart that it's her fault.

It is a safety alert and not an actual recall. The safety alert is to inform parents like PPs who had one from an older child when the warning was not listed.

If her kid was standing on the kitchen table and fell off, would it be the table's fault? No. If you rear-end someone in your car, is it your cars fault? No.

This woman is an idiot. She needs to take responsibility.

They say "Caution: Hot"  on the cup BECAUSE some idiot spilled a hot drink (I think from McD's) on themselves, and sued.

I "heard" (therefore, don't know if it's true), that in that case at McD's, the bottom of the cup melted and the coffee fell out the bottom. I wish there was a way to look up the actual lawsuit.

Yep.  Someone tried warning me about how it was recalled.  I told them that it was recalled because of user error by parents who put their children in precarious situations then try to blame the maker for their mistake.

I LOVE the Bumbo, and I hope they don't go down because of improper use of their product.

In one of my law classes we studied the case. The individual out the cup between their legs. The top ended up coming off (pressure from being between ones legs) and the coffee burnt their lap. So had user put the cup in a cup holder the lid would not have come off. My Keruig makes things hot enough that it would burn if spilled

Totally this. Esp. if she is just a casual FB friend... I have a big mouth though, and am very open with my opinions... and wouldnt care if she defriended me or anything...

Because some idiot dropped their straightener on their foot and raised holy hell about it, I'm sure.  I think it's stupid that companies have to put all these warnings on products because the general public is too stupid to use common sense.

  • I didn't know about the recall but I have enough common sense to know that baby could fall off the counter if I set him in the bumbo up there.

That being said, I *did* used to put him up on the deepest part of our counter when he was much smaller and much less wiggly. I would prepare dinner and let him watch me. I would never walk away from him, and after the first time I saw him try to push his way out of the bumbo, I never set him up there again. Like PP said, if he had fallen out, it would have been my fault not Bumbo's.

  • Why would you put a bumbo on a counter.  I don't understand this at all.  If I need to cook I put DD in her jumper in the kitchen or in her high chair with toys.  I don't see why that is so difficult.
  • The recall was just so they could put the safety labels on the Bumbos made without them.  Since then, all the newly manufactured seats have the warning printed on them in big red letter that you really cannot miss.

Before J got wiggly and started to reach for anything in sight, we would put him on the counter with us directly in front of him, or on the dinner table to feed him.  Now that he tries to grab for everything, there's no way we do that.  MH didn't understand at first why, then little man took a header onto the carpet (he was already on the floor).

Yes I personally read every owners manual for baby gear and make sure I fully understand how things are meant to be used.  I can't stand people you don't even use enough common sense to know that you shouldn't put your child in an unsecure seat on a high surface...nothing about that even without reading the directions and warnings would seem remotly safe!  It is sad when they issue recalls because people are too stupid to use common sense.

I am glad that her child wasn't more severly hurt.
