Just had to vent about my long and uncomfortable day! The only good thing about today is that I'm at home now and I'm SOOOO thankful I had a doula!
I should start by saying I didn't want an induction. My doctor wasn't available for my 40 week appointment so I saw the nurse. The nurse said I'd need to schedule my induction on Monday for sometime before I hit 42 weeks. Ok. Sounds good. Someone in the OB's office misunderstood and called me on Friday to let me know my induction was scheduled FOR Monday. I said she was mistaken and she said the doctor was out of the office and it wasn't negotiable.
After some crying and being bummed I decided I'd just roll with it and went in for the induction this morning. After I was hooked to all the IVs for an hour my doctor stopped by to check in. She was surprised I'd decided to get the induced becuase I'd planned an un-medicated birth. After we talked I discovered it was a misunderstanding at her office and I didn't need an induction. I decided to stay at the hospital because I was already there. My doctor wanted to go ahead and break my water, but on the advice of my doula (who was great!) I decided to wait.
Twelve hours later with a huge Pitocin dose - nothing was happening. I was starving because I fasted after dinner and by this evening it had been almost 24 hours since I'd eaten. My doula had the great suggestion of asking if I could just check out because nothing was happening. After some negotiating with the doctor she agreed it was either I go home or have a c sectoin. Umm... that's an easy one. I'll go home! Now I'm scheduled for a sonogram on Wed and an induction on Saturday. I'm SOOO thankful I didn't have my water broken. It may have caused labor to move faster, but I wouldn't be at home now if I'd had my water broken.
Anyways. It was a long day and I'm glad I'll at least have a chance to labor naturally sans Pitocin and pesky monitoring. Just had to vent.
Re: Failed Induction - Long
That's crazy! It sounds like your doula was a life saver. Can I ask who it was?
Duuuuuuude. That's ridiculous. And the induction being non-negotiable? I would be sosososososo livid with the practice. (And I kinda want to find out what practice it was, just so I can be sure to steer clear!)
Glad you got to go home, and sorry you had to go through such a stressful failed/unnecessary attempt. Hopefully when LO decides to become an outside baby, it'll be under more desirable circumstances!!

I had no idea inductions not working was even a possibility. I was having contractions, but things weren't progressing. So ... basically I spent 10 hours hooked to an IV and uncomfortable monitors for nothing.
I got to the c-section or go home point because I was STARVING! I was managing the pain, but at 10 months pregnant fasting for 24 hours just wasn't doing it for me.
My doula, who I very very highly recommend, is Am e from G et B abied. The last few months she has had lots of great advice and she helped me manage my pain all day today without drugs. Hiring a doula was a splurge for us, but I'm SO thankful we did. Worth every penny already AND she isn't going to charge us for labor round 2 ... when baby is ready to make her grand entrance.
I don't feel comfortable saying who my doc is because I really think this was an issue with a nurse in her office and not her. My doctor seemed genuinely annoyed that the nurse who scheduled the induction wouldn't just call her to confirm that I didn't need it. So... although today really really sucked for me and my husband I'm not blaming my doctor. I am, however, going to give the nurse some serious stink eye at my next appointment!
Unless you have seriously amazing insurance I'd be raising hell over the cost of your whole unnecessary day at the hospital.
Ditto - but I'm glad you're pleased with your doc and doula. Hopefully the practice will address whatever miscommunication caused the scheduling error.

I, too, had a failed induction. It sucks. I can empathize. How frustrating! I didn't want mine either and had planned to go unmedicated but it was medically necessary.
I'm glad your doctor came in and listened to you. I bet that nurse is getting reamed.
Wow. I'm so sorry!!
Yay for a good doula and yay for a baby that gets to keep cooking til s/he is ready! I hope that when the actual time comes, your labor and delivery are smooth sailing! And you can totally do an unmediated birth--you'll feel like you're on top of the world for months afterward!!
oh yay! i know ame from playing volleyball at town lake ymca 5 years ago. she's super nice.
I don't see how you won't have to pay for it. You ultimately made the decision to get induced. You could have gone home in the morning after you spoke with your doctor before any pitocin was given to you.
I realize that's very hard to do because you are already there and excited to see the baby. I wish I would have done the same thing and not had my water broken by my doctor because by the time I realized my epidural wasn't going to work it was too late.
FX that you go into labor naturally and don't need to be induced again!
