thoughts? initials that spell something

So we've decided to name our daughter Alison. Our last name starts with an 'M.'  The only middle name we both like is Rose (it's a family name). Which would make her initials ARM.

It's bothering me that her initials will spell something -- am I overreacting? Would you hesitate to give your kid a name whose initials spelled something (even something innocuous like arm)?

Re: thoughts? initials that spell something

  • ARM wouldnt bother me but other things would. OUr son will have the initials FRK and we joked its good we didnt do ***. =)

  • our first name that we had picked out was william arnold dunk which spells wad. lovely, i know...since we've changed it to liam mathew dunk which just is licenced medical doctor. it's hard when your last name starts with a letter that can easily spell words.

i don't think arm is a big deal. we only changed it because wad was a big deal to us. even with using liam his first and last innitial are LD i decided i don't care anymore and we're going with it.

  • I wouldn't worry about it- my initials used to spell HAG and very few people actually picked up on it.

  • I don't think its a big deal. No one ever uses their full initials for anything. My initials spelled HAR growing up. It was annoying, but did not ruin my life.
  • I am glad we aren't having to pick boy names because the only one DH and I both liked was Gaige Oliver and our last name starts with a D

  • it would bother me, but thats b/c i'm weird like that. i doubt 99% of people will think anything of it. Although, my brother's initials are BLU and they used to call him Brandon Blue as a baby and I thought it was kind of cute.
Mom to 2 beautiful girls, 3 yrs and 22 months old. My 2nd was born at 32 weeks due to Rhogam failure/severe complications from Rh disease and is our miracle. She has bilateral auditory neuropathy and a cochlear implant, activated 4/5/2012 at 19 months. Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • I actually love intials that spell things - I tried to get our sons too but it didn't work out. My husband's are CAN - I had a friend growing up whose first name was Megan and her initials were MEG. I alwasy thought that was cool.

  • Well I am JAR. I read a study in my Psych class on the fact that if your initials spell something, even if a bad word on average live 5-7 years longer than those who do not.
  • Our DD's initials will spell out BET.  So few people will notice as it isn't like the world will know her middle name.
  • I think ARM sounds a lot better than PMS!  Not my initials by the way.

I don't think people usually pick up on it unless you actually tell them, it should be fine.

  • I'm really only bothered if it's something negative. My favorite first name starts with H and the last name with R, so "Olivia" is right out for a MN! I wouldn't be bothered by HER or HAR, but I'm trying to avoid a vowel for a MI just because I think a consonant would be prettier.
  • My DH's initials spell BAD and FIL's spell MAD.  If we go with the name we are thinking the baby would be NAD.  I am hesitating on this name because of that.  But I don't think ARM is bad at all.  Even if another kid does notice, that is not really something to make fun of.
  • My best friend is Allison Renee.  She was ARM.  Now she is ARC.  She always loved that her initials spelled ARM, and she is happy that they still spell something.  I think as long as they don't spell PMS or something like that, it's pretty cool to have a word for initials.
  • We were using NAP but its now NPP.  My sis was already calling him nappy head...

Sweetness, my initials (pre-marriage) spelled A..R..F!  I got teased a lot but I lived through it.  My parents did it again 7 years later to my little sister who is still A..R..F..

ARF -- that one is tough. :)

JAR -- I thought the study suggested something like positive connotation initials were beneficial (like ACE) -- I don't remember that spelling anything was beneficial. Go figure. But then again, my last psych class was in college 8 years ago, so...

  • I don't think ARM is a big deal.  My SIL is EATS.  That one would be a problem for me. :)
  • My mom's initials spelled JAY, hence my name. :)
  • As long as the initials aren't KKK....that would be tough.
  • Mine spell RAGS and I LOVE it
  • I don't have a problem with it.  My Mom tells me it's lucky (have no idea where she heard that though).  DH and I both have the initals JAB (same for me maiden and married) and I survived.
  • With us, dh is a Star Wars fan, hence our son's name is going to be Lucas.  My nephew brought up that his initials are going to be LEA, so he'll be both Luke and Leia (nephew can't spell, I pointed out there is and 'i' in Leia).  don't think I want to add an extra middle name so that works though.            Lucas Elliott Ian.....nah, don't like it. :)

  • I don't think it's too big of a deal.  But then again, my daughter's initials will spell out LAW (which is great fun as I'm an attorney).

Side note, my Cousin was going to be Andrew Stephen (MN after his dad).  But the last name is S.  So his initials would've been A-S-S  Good thing my Grandma pointed that out to them before they signed the birth certificate.  They changed the middle name to Thomas.

I give up trying to add my kids' photos. Just know that they are adorable.

Funny how you have to be conscience of these things.  My maiden name is Jack, and my parents were going to name me Jennifer until my grandmother pointed out that a Jenny is a female donkey and a Jack is a male donkey.  Its always the grandma to notice it seems.

  • I would just try to avoid spelling anything bad. LOL My initials until I got married were LAB. It never bothered me that it spelled something that benign.?

    ?

I really liked the name Bethany, but BJ doesn't seem like a good thing to peg a girl with. LOL?
