anyone have a husband/bf who is a teacher??? please help!!

my husband is a teacher and we just found out that they are only allowing him to take 2 personal and 2 sick days to be with me and the baby (in those days are the days in labor and in the hospital).  Meanwhile, he has 30 sick days saved up for this.  I was wondering what you guys recommend that we do.  Should he stay with me until I have the baby and return to work the next day while I am in the hospital?  Do I need him there the following day? Since this is my first I am very nervous and not sure how much help I will need and where I will need it (home vs the hospital)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  TIA!

  •  Well, if everything goes well, you won't be in the hospital for 4 days. I would just have him come with you when you go to the hospital and go back to work 4 days later.

  • That's a little ridiculous!! We are both teachers. DH is taking 1-2 weeks off with me. What the heck is up with his school district??

  • What state does he teach in?!?! Wow! That sucks! I'm a teacher and my collaboration partner (male) and his wife are having a baby 4 weeks after me and he's taking off one full week but could take the rest of the year if he wanted using his sick time. That is horrible!
  • this doesn't sound legal. check out the FMLA laws. He should be allowed to take more than that. I have had male co-workers that were teachers take off more than 2 weeks. Is he in a union? He should talk to his union rep if thats the case.

  • Family leave act allows him to take time, but without pay.  I've heard of districts allowing the fathers to use their sick time.  I just wanted to see what other people are doing.  My DH checked with his union and they confirmed that he is only allowed those days.  we are trying to plan for every situation just so we know what to do when the time comes, but it all makes me sad.  I was hoping to have him home with me for at least a week :(

  • Wow, first of all I am surprised they can tell him how many days he can take! My hubby can take as many as he has! I think you definetly want him there the day you give birth. You will be tired and super sore in your vag that night and will need him. Other then that I would say the first couple days home are more important then the rest of the hospital stay. At the hospital the nurses help out a lot and at home you will want him there to help you if possible. This is just my experience though.

  • If you're in the United States, his district has more than 50 employees, and he has been with them for a year, then the Family Medical Leave Act applies. He is entitled to up to 12 weeks off. He needs to talk to HR.

  • My DH is a school counselor. He only gets 2 personal and 5 family sick days. Last time he took off the two days I was in labor as just plain sick days. Once she was here he started using the other days. Have your H ask his rep what would happen if he just called out when you were in labor and didn't take his official days until the baby arrives. It might buy you an extra day or two. Also it might be nice to have him just take the allowed time but then go forward with the idea that he will occassionally call out during the first few months to be home with you. I found that I was fine early on but wanted more help (sleep time) as the sleepless nights stacked up.

  • Another idea couple of ideas. a) Does he have a good relationship with his principal?  He could see if he/she will support him that way.  b) Why doesn't he just call in sick?  How are they going to know if he is really sick or not.  My principal is not allowed to ask for a doctor's note unless sick time off is excessive.  Which usually means more than 5 days off in a role.  I hate to be sneaky, but the policy is ridiculous.

  • My coworker's wife just had a baby. He is taking 2 weeks off. Basically, HR told him as long as he doesn't take three sick days in a row off, he's fine. So he is doing a personal day in between. Our contract doesn't have anything about a paternity leave. I would have your husband contact his HR department and his union rep to confirm. Also he should be able to take FMLA leave that would be unpaid (but he should be able to use his sick days). He should read his contract too to make sure there isnt a clause in there that he's missing.

  • He should qualify for FMLA. He needs to check with his union. My teammate's wife had a baby this fall. He took 3 weeks after the delivery, then is going to take 3 more this spring.

  • I was thinking about the 2 sick days one personal two sick day option to buy us another day.  I am just freaking out that I will have not have home with me..  I just hate that he has so many sick days and he is not allowed to use them.  His contract says that he has to have a doctors note after 2 sick days.  he spoke to his union and HR and they both said the same thing :(

Thank you guys for all of your help, I appreciate it!

  • My husband and I are both teachers and he plans on taking at least 1 week off and then just working games if he needs to after that if he wants to stay with me during the day.  If he has time saved up then he's allowed to use that time as he wishes!  Granted in our district if it's longer than 2 or 3 days you just have to inform your principal of the circumstances, but those are his days to use.  He needs to talk to someone in benefits about this!

  • DH was able to stay with me at the hospital but was back at work (MD) the next Monday.  I had a section but recovered well.  It was no big deal.

Yes, but it is not a paid protection.
