Has anyone ever gone through Aflac for STD?

I pay into Aflac for short term disability. I want to use it when I go out on maternity leave in May. However, I want to use some of my paid sick days first. I called and spoke with a claims rep today and they said there was no time limit as to when I can file a claim as long as it is after the baby is born.

I'm a little weary about this because I feel like maybe it is too good to be true? I know some other STD plans make you file for the claim soon after the baby is born.

Does anyone have any experience with Aflac?

Basically what I want to do is use about 15-20 paid sick days and when those run up, apply for my short term disability.

If anyone has any info, thank you!

  • I took out Aflac STD specifically for maternity leave, but I've obviously not used it yet.. I'd check with your rep and find out what you need to use first. The STD or the sick days.

  • I have Aflac too.  I actually had to use it this past April when I had my ACL reconstructed.  I put in a claim right after the surgery and I also used my banked sick time as well.  They have no idea that your doing both.

For maternity leave I plan on putting in a claim and banking the check as well as getting paid from work.  I will be using unused sick time and vacation time.  Then when I run out of paid time from work, I will have the check as back up.

so they don't check with my employer to see if I'm getting paid sick time? That is great news. I should just file for the claim right away then while I'm using my sick time!

  • I have and had used it with last baby and will use it with this one as well. They send you one check so it really doesn't matter when you put claim in. The only difference in amount is whether you have a vaginal or csec delivery. The pay for 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for csec.

  • Aflac doesn't care if your getting paid or not.... Fill out the claim for right after you have your baby :)
  • I looked into and they said there is an option you can put on it so that you don't have to use sick time first.  i however couldn't use it for maternity leave bc you had to have it ten months prior to giving birth.
  • It was true for me. I used six weeks that the company paid for and then I took my six weeks from Aflac. Aflac was a lifesaver and I was so glad I had it. It was very easy to get the money. Getting my dr to fill out all the needed paperwork was another story. haha
