C-sections

No makeup!

I just got a call from my hospitals OB pre-op and as she was going over instructions for my c-section tomorrow she told me no makeup?! I know tons of women on here have worn makeup for their c-sections, as I did for my first because it was unscheduled. I'm not vain, but I'd like to look decent for my son's first pictures with me! I know it's pregnancy hormones but I feel like crying now because I don't like the pictures of me with DS#1 and now I'll look even worse with this one. Did anyone on here break the rules and wear makeup even if they were told not to? What did they do?

Re: No makeup!

  • You are having your baby tomorrow??  Good luck!!

I'm sure the first pics of you and your baby will be beautiful.  Makeup or no, there is something about a baby and a mother meeting for the first time that transcends everything else, kwim?

  • I was told I could wear make up, but I only wore foundation.

  • I wore makeup but it was pretty much off by the time we took pictures. Don't worry too much. Like the PP said no amount of makeup can give you that new mommy glow- that's all natural!

  • I was told no nail polish on fingers or toes but I had just gotten a manicure and pedicure the day before so I left it on. It was pretty bright color so I know someone had to notice but no one said anything. If it's important to you wear it. The worst they can do is ask you to wash it off. I'd just bring some of those makeup removal face cloth things and be prepared to take it off if anyone asks you to. I also tried to wear a bra despite it being a no no but I was caught and they made me take it off :(

  • My instructions said not to and I wore some anyways.  Very minimal, just powder, blush, and mascara.  The nurse complimented how good my waterproof mascara was so they obviously knew I had it on and didn't care.

  • they just said no jewelry or metal for me.  I think a little makeup will be fine.  they also had no issues with my pedicure.

  • How would make up interfere with your c section?  I say go for it!  The only problem I had was the spinal block makes me itch like crazy, so I ended up washing my face shortly after anyway.  I completely understand your desire to look your best for your first family photos.  Good luck tomorrow!!!

  • My hospital said no makeup too.  The pre-op coordinator said something about not wanting anything on your skin or fingernails in case they have to put you under.  I put on some tinted moisturizer and a little bit of bronzer so I wouldn't look totally awful, but I was bawling as she was being born, so it totally didn't matter anyway.

I will say that a good friend recently had a baby and she was all done up for her pictures, and I thought it looked a little weird.

They want to see if you turn blue.

  • When I went in for my pre-op blood labs the day before, I was instructed no make up, jewelry, lotion and no deoderant!  The last one nearly killed me.  I also had to bathe the night before and day of with a special wash that reminded me of my vet's office. Yuck.  When I told the OB's who were doing the c/s during the prep that I wasn't allowed to wear deoderant, they seemed surprised and said sure, put some on.  Thank goodness I had some right there with DH's things!  On the other hand, I had no desire to wear make up as it would have had to stay on all night & the next day til I could get up and get it off.

I guess every hospital/OR has their own idiosyncracies.  :)
