Prenatal vitamins-- RX or OTC?

My Dr told me it's fine to take over the counter Prenatal vitamins, but all my friends have taken prescription.... Who is taking what?  And has anyone heard of the benefits of taking RX over OTC?

Re: Prenatal vitamins-- RX or OTC?

  • If you need extra folic acid, the rx can be nicer but otherwise there's no difference at all.  I take rainbow light prenatals and a Nordic naturals prenatal fish oil.  Both easy on the tummy.

  • I take One a Day womans Prenatal. It comes with two different pills for everyday. One is a Prenatal Mutlivitamin Tablet and the other is a Prenatal DHA/EPA Liquid Gel. I haven't had any problems with them. My OB told me they were fine.
  • I take an OTC prenatal and an Expecta. My doc has never mentioned a need for a RX one.

  • I'm taking an OTC w/DHA  and an additional 1000mg of folic per my midwife. I looked in to the RX and with my insurance it was going to be $50 a month.

  • Mine is OTC and I take a fish oil supplement for DHA. My doc was fine with both.

  • My RX prenatal were going to run me 50.00 (my rx coverage sucks) a month. I could pay another satelite bill for that. I have been tatking one a day prenatals OTC They run about 28.00 for a 60 day supply. I've been told there isn't much difference. My OB just said if I had to get OTC to make sure and get something with DHA in it. The One A Days have DHA in a seperate tablet, but comes in the same box. They have never bothered my tummy, but I take them at night to be safe lol

I've been taking these, too.  Doc said they're just fine, I take them at bedtime and they don't give me any trouble.  I was taking the One A Day multivitamins before, so I felt safe going with their prenatals.

  • I take OTC kroger brand prenatals... had a huge bottle with DD and trying to go through those. I also take a colace daily because the vitamins make me stopped up.... both approved by OB.
  • RX because it is $15 for 3 months. I have ones with the DHA in them, so there is only 1 pill.
  • My doctor gave me RX ones but I had already bought the Target brand OTC so I am taking those until they are gone.

  • I have a hard time swallowing the prescription ones so I switched to the gummy ones. Plus they taste good so I remember to take them! I work at a Walmart pharmacy and the RX ones at my store are only $4 a month if that's what matters to you. My OB said it didn't matter either way.

I take these also and my OB said they were fine, too.  They gave me a bunch of different samples, but if these are fine and don't make me sick, I figured, why mix it up?
