Screen Door is Up!

I've seen some posts around the boards about keeping cats/pets out of the nursery. Well, we decided to go the screen door route. My husband and dad put the door up this weekend and it looks great! We were able to keep the regular door on too :)

The door was pretty cheap, around 50 bucks. Kitty hasn't found a way to open it (thank goodness) so I think the problem is solved. So happy I don't have to worry about cat hair in the nursery and about kitty bothering baby later on.

Just wanted to pass along the tip for those who hadn't heard it yet... screen doors are a great way to keep pets out of the nursery!

Re: Screen Door is Up!

  • I really wanted to do this, but then I realized that the landlady might not want a bunch of screws drilled into her door frame for the hinges. :(

Couldn't you patch the holes when you're ready to move out?

No, the frames are solid, stained wood from the 1940s. We are going to just get the highest tension-mounted baby gate we can find and hope it keeps the cats out. And I guess we're SOL on the hair.

I'd like to see a pic of how yours looks, though! If we are in our own place by the time baby #2 comes along (please, God), we'll probably go this route.

Just wanted to warn you in advance that I have two cats and both will jump over our Carlson extra tall pet gate (41").  They aren't skinny and they still try to squeeze through the bars too.  If your gate has bars, you might need to wrap some mesh or something around so they don't try to go through.  Hopefully they're not jumpers or you might have to figure something else out.

  • Yeah, we'll put the gate up for awhile before the baby comes and see how it goes. We tried a shorter one when we wanted the dog to stay out of that room but the cats to be able to go in and out, and they were utterly confused.  I'm sure they would have figured it out eventually, though.  The mesh is a good idea to keep them from going between the bars!

eta: I keep forgetting, but I was also going to get a can of psst cat to deter them from trying to get over the gate.

Dagnew - if you upload it to tinypic or photobucket, it should give you a code for direct layouts. Then you just click on the little tree icon above the box where you reply to posts and paste the code in there.

  • Oh yeah, that looks good! I like that style of door. People thought I was crazy when I was considering doing the screen door thing. I think they were picturing something very different.

Thanks! I originally wanted the door in white, but they didn't have one in the size we needed (or in the price range we wanted). But the natural wood is growing on me and it's not like it's going to be there forever! Bummer that you aren't able to put one up :(
