Sorry this is long! I know that Iam probably worrying about this too soon but I am starting to get concernedabout DS?s gross motor skills. He isn?t crawling yet (which I know isn?t a hugedeal) but he has been rocking on hands and knees for more than two months andcan?t seem to figure it out. Every time he does this his butt collapses down prettyquickly like maybe he isn?t strong enough to hold himself up. He is not mobilein any way. He doesn?t scoot, army crawl, or anything like that. He also cannotstand while holding on to things, pull up on things, and is very wobbly when Ihold him up to stand.

The pedi was a little concerned athis 9 month appointment but wouldn?t be worried until his 12 month appointment.She was encouraged that his muscles seemed strong while he was sitting (he wasalso a little behind in sitting). I am starting to get a little worried though.Has anyone been through this or have any advice? Is there anything that I canwork with him on to help him? Thanks!

I was getting a little worried about Ellie because she was just rolling and would "swim" when she was laid on her stomach at around 8.5 to 9 months.

Suddenly though she started crawling, pulling up, and crusing all within a two week time frame. It was so fast once she finally got the concept of moving. She still isn't walking yet so I think she's just on a slower time line than the rest of her baby friends.

You shouldn't really worry about it. All kids are different, mine starting actually crawling just a couple of weeks ago and she's 10 months.

Thanks guys! I don't think that I'm really worried about the fact that he isn't crawling yet. I think I'm more worried that it looks like he may not be strong enough to do it.

Ellie refused to get on her hands and knees. If I put her up there she'd just fall over. She eventually went from "swimming" to pushing hersef forward with her feet and then took off on all fours when she discovered it moved her faster. He'll get there.

Lucas didn't start crawling until a little after 9 months. He went from rolling to crawling. There was no scooting or army crawling.

DD didn't start crawling (she would 'swim' like Hyfa's DD) until 9mo.

DD just started pulling up to her knees at 10 mo. She's trying to get her feet under her now, at 11 mo.

He may just do it all at once! Also, are you holding him a lot or putting him in a bouncer/exersaucer a lot? If so, that may be inhibiting his ability to practice the motions needed to crawl, pull up, etc. A friend of mine has a 7 month old who just now rolled over b/c he's always being held!

I thought DD was thisclose to crawling for a couple of months but she just kept wiping out. Kind of like you say, she didn't seem strong enough, but she didn't even get on her hands and knees and rock, just straight wiped out. And I couldn't see how she would ever learn to sit up from laying down or pull up if she could even get on her hands and knees. She didn't scootch or army crawl or anything. Well in the past two weeks she has learned to crawl, scootch, sit up, pull up, and cruise and is walking pretty good holding on to big peoples hands. Just too weeks ago she was soooo wobbly. Don't worry. I couldn't see how she was ever going to be able to do it, and now all of the sudden she is. GL.

Thanks. You guys are making me feel much better about this. He does still spend some time in his jumper but he gets plenty of time playing on the floor. Hopefully he will figure it out soon so I can stop being a worry wart!

I wouldn't be worried - the rocking is a really good sign!!! My big guy rocked for about two months before he finally figured out how to really crawl - he just has more mass to lift and coordinate.

It really helped him seeing his brother crawl and being around other crawlers - so maybe some play dates?

My son was 10.5 months when he began crawling. He would try to crawl with his arms, but he didn't figure out to move his legs. He finally started to move his left leg, but his right leg would just get in his way. I started thinking there was something wrong with his right leg. Turns out - he's just awesome like that!

He's crawling like a madman now!

My DS only army crawls. He doesn't seem at all interested in crawling on all fours, pulling up, or getting into a seated position. He does, however, seem to want to walk without learning how to pull up to standing, balance, or stand up by himself, lol. I am afraid we are in for it, but I think each LO goes at their own pace, and skips things they are not interested in at the time. I also wear him a LOT, so he is down on the ground less, so I think he may have less practice.

If the Pedi wasn't concerned about his strength then I wouldn't worry at all. My daughter was at the end of her 9th month when she started crawling. I think what motivated her is she was around another baby who was crawling at daycare.

At her 9th month appt, the Pedi said she wasn't concerned but she did give me the number to ECI (early childhood intervention). She said that my daughter obviously had the strength but just needed the motivation. I called ECI, got a voicemail, left a detailed message and they never called back. So I said "screw it, she'll learn... not gonna bother calling again." And sure enough, she learned.

A nurse told me a story that really eased my mind. She said her DS didn't crawl or walk until 15 months. Now he's a normal 3 year old who is all over the place and is totally making up for it lol.

But anyway maybe you can call your local ECI (if you have one) or schedule playdates with crawlers.
