I HATE shopping for Maternity Clothes

So many of the clothes are matronly and so not my style.  Any suggestions?

Re: I HATE shopping for Maternity Clothes

  • Have you looked at Gap and Target?  I've realized shopping online provides A LOT more options than what any of these places carry in store.

  • I feel the same way.... For Jeans JCPenny and Old Navy have cute ones! I haven't really looked for tops yet as I am still small. Good Luck!

  • What is your style and what are you looking for? Work clothes, comfy clothes, everyday clothes??

  • I went to the Mall of America this weekend and could have cried I was so happy with the selection I found!  I get most of my clothes pre-pregnancy at Gap and Old Navy but neither of those stores where I live carry a maternity section.  I have ordered some stuff online but was leery of ordering too much because I wasn't sure of my size.  This weekend I totally stocked up at both Gap and Old Navy so I hope I'm set!  I agree that so many of the clothing options are so old ladyish!  I was regular looking clothes that simply have room for my big belly!  I would suggest finding out your size and ordering online if you don't have stores in your area.  Good luck!

Thanks, I will have to look at Gap and Target.  I'm looking for casual shirts for the weekends and time at home.  I bought aa boatneck 3/4 length shirt at Mhood if this helps tell you my style..

  • I feel you!

What I recently did is get some tops/tunics that fit well in the shoulders/bust, but were blousy/ loose fitting.  They are totally my style, are really comfortable, and have a lot of room for a growing belly. In the meantime I can either tuck them in, or wear them with a great belt to show that I still have some shape. There are some shops that cater to taller women, and I would recommend that you try there - the extra length in the body of the shirt will accommodate a growing bump easily.

  • I don't hate it, but I can honestly say that I found 2 pairs of cute mat. jeans and I just pair them with longer mens colored tank tops (we call them wife beaters around here) and a cardigan sweater. This is honestly my go to outfit any more. I can even put on a cute pair of heeled booties and go out for a nice dinner in it and no one is the wiser. :)

  • Not me! I ended finding tons of stylish options :)

www.apeainthepod.com - has awesome designer maternity jeans. I ended up getting HUDSON'S boot cut jeans in boot cut .. so comfy and cute!

www.shopbop.com - has a small but great selection of fashion forward maternity items.

Also, I have managed to keep my wardrobe simple and add it fun accessories to spice it up :) Good luck!

  • I have 3 pairs of jeans that I rotate. 2 from Motherhood, bootcut designer jeans. And 1 pair of skinny jeans from Old Navy. I bought a few tops from Gap and Old Navy online, the longer kind with the side ruching. And I still wear my regular cardigans over it all. Weekends I like to go with leggings and a long tunic and boots. Or sweats and a t if i'm staying in. I found you don't need alot, just a few key peices that you absolutely love and are well made for the long haul. HTH!

  • I second this, I have such a hard time finding clothes that I like that fit anyway and its much harder with maternity clothes!

I found Mhood to be matronly as well but I find alot of comfy and stylish stuff at Old Navy, Gap and Target, as the other postes stated. Down fall most of the stores only offer maternity online and this makes it hard.  But if you read the ratings/comments on most items you can avoid bad buys.

I've also found some great stuff at these other sites...

https://www.zulily.com/index.php?tab=women-maternity  - this one also has great baby stuff and it's all at a great discount!

Good luck, I hope this helps some.

  • I had a few breakdowns in the Motherhood Maternity dressing room shopping for jeans. I have a very "classic" style and feel that the maternity clothes are made for teenagers. My jeans do not need bedazled pockets or tears in them. I ended up finding a few pairs of jeans at Target and have stuck to long sleeve t-shirts in gray, black, and a few colors. A lot of the stuff is cheap looking... Polyester crap. I am right there with you.

I have also found nice basics at the Gap Maternity and Ann Taylor Loft Maternity. I bought all of my work clothes from the Loft. It was pricey but worth it.

  • Gap, Old Navy and Motherhood Maternity have been good for me.  I like the 3/4 length T-shirts with the side gathers, they show off the bump nicely.

Gap was good to me for jeans, I found an awesome pair of boot cut jeans there.

  • Check Boden (www.Boden.com). They're a British company that's recently expanded to the US, with cute kids clothes as well as adult stuff. Their maternity section is small, but I've loved everything I've gotten from them. I have a great jeweled tunic that looks fantastic over leggings as well as one of the most comfortable dresses ever.
  • I have found that WalMart online has some uber-cheap stuff!  I bought a couple of jersey dresses there, I pair with tights and boots, and I'm set.

Target online also had some good deals, I found two dresses for work there.

  • I'm pretty plain when it comes to my style I think. I've found some really cute long sleve shirts and henlys at Target on clearance! Everytime I go to Target I check out the clearance rack because they have new maternity tops for $10. I also wear a lot of tank tops that are long so it covers my belly still. Just pair that with some leggings/stretchy jeans and I'm good to go. I have bought one pair of maternity pants from Target that I haven't worn yet and a maternity coat that I love!! It was from Motherhood Maternity. It will grow with my belly :)

  • I just started, but I'm also having issues - I hate how most of the stuff sits on me, and I don't understand why so much of it around here (in NH) is thin/summery! I know that you're supposed to feel hot all the time when you're pregnant, but I'm still freezing most of the day!

  • I decided early on to keep things simple so I didn't have to stress too much or invest a great deal in what I considered to be ugly clothing.  I'm doing leggings/tights/stretchy pants of some kind with boots and long shirts all winter.  So far that has made things easy.  I hit the Pea in a Pod section of a local maternity store a couple of times for long tops and stocked up on leggings.  Granted I live in about 6 outfits but hey I only need 5 to get through the work week lol.  At home, I'm living in a silky robe or pajama pants and t-shirts
  • I totally agree.  I keep going into the maternity stores- we only have two in the city where I live, and hate everything.  This is my 4th pregnancy.. and I have been wearing maternity clothes this is my 4th time- so I have tons of pants- but now a different season I am pregnant.  mainly it will be summer so I will be in capris and dresses and tank tops- so I am looking for sales on these.. but I agree- all look yucky.  I find the styles grannyish.  TOTALLY.  the "dress" clothes are NMS at alll.  and dress pants. YUCK.

I have been living in sweats, leggings and pj bottoms.  (P.s I was learking too-- sorry)  lol
