Where to go for tax advice?

My husband and I probably don't need help filling out our taxes, but we do need someone competent in tax law that we can ask some questions of. Where do we go for something like that?  I imagine H&R Block mostly does tax prep, which isn't really what we need. We don't run a company or anything, but we have a few tricky questions we need answers to.

We live in north Austin, so that location is most convenient, but we'll drive if we need to

  • Maybe try a CPA? I don't have a recommendation, but some others on this board might have one.

  • We went to an H&R Block office by our house for some weird tax stuff we had in 2008 (1st home exemptions, 401k ->IRA->cash out->cash back in). I kind of got the feeling the guy we were talking to didn't know his behind from a hole in the ground but I went ahead with it and paid the little extra for their special "guarantee" program. It just needed to get done. We got a letter from the IRS and went back to that office, different guy, again, wasn't impressed but we re-submitted and the IRS STILL didn't like it. This was an almost 2 year process!

Long story short, we came :::this::: close to getting full on audited but the H&R guy at their main north office was able to figure out where the return went wrong (3 times) and worked tirelessly with us and the IRS to get it all fixed. Then worked with corporate to get our money back. The guarantee saved us over $3,000. While we were getitng all the 2008 taxes fixed, he filed our 2009 and 2010 taxes for us and we will be going back to him this year! We would have spent thousands in other legal fees if we didn't already have someone working for us.

To me, it's worth the money to know you have someone in your corner. I know all you want is answers but in our case, for 2009/2010, our numbers were WAY off from what they had, even using their online tax prep software. There's just so many tiny things they know about that we don't. I won't ever do my own taxes ever again. If were weren't already in hot water with the IRS, I'd probably go back and redo the last 7 years because I know I screwed myself out of a lot of money. Our "guy" talked me back into doing flex spending by showing me how much money we could have saved in 2010 if we'd used our daycare/health accounts. Nothing like seeing $3,800 on paper to make you realize it probably IS worth the trouble of keeping reciepts and such!!

  • We use Blakesee, Monzingo & Company in Pflugerville. I really like them. Our taxes are a nightmare and they did great last year. They know their stuff

  • I use capital tax in hutto, but he also has a new office in p'ville. It's a fllat fee $200. He always gets me more $$ back then turbo tax, even if I have a simple return. It's quick and easy. I've had a few referrals and they've all been happy with his service. And no, I don't get a reward for referrals.
