Blood draws in Toddlers

Is.utterly.awful!! I hope we don't have to do that again any time soon. It took them forever to find a vein and the first time it stopped bleeding so they had to go to the other arm. I was literally fighting back tears b/c I knew that would make it worse for B. She never cries for her shots and her finger prick the last 2 times she didn't even flinch. I was totally unprepared for this!

But I have to share this. When it was done, we walked out to the waiting room. B was in a crying, gagging almost puking cry. Nothing I tried helped, I thought she was going to lose her breakfast. Well this big ol grandpa looking man knelt down next to her and said "next time they have to do this, you call me. I'll have your back" and he gave her a business card. Well B said "Yeahhhh" and gave him a high five. All was right with the world again in her eyes.  I was so excited (b/c that's a new word, now she's up to 5!) and people probably thought I was nuts for being so excited about my baby crying. But that man was an angel right about then.

Re: Blood draws in Toddlers

  • The draw we did when Eve was 1 was reeeeaaaally bad.. but when we did it at 2 she didnt even cry. I don't know what the difference was.. maybe just her mood.  We also let her have a lollipop as soon as she was done

I love the story about that man.. Sometimes I really do believe on angels on earth.. Its amazing that sometimes there is a stranger there to do or say just the right thing exactly when you need it.

  • Awww they are awful, I agree! Dd's 2 yo blood draw was the same thing - 2 attempts on 1 arm and finally successful on the other arm. Plus she hated the rubber band thing - I think they caught her skin bc it looked like a burn in 1 area. I was holding back tears and singing to her to try and distract her, so sad. I'm just so thankful she doesn't need them routinely.

He was, he truly was. I was about to cry too and he must have saw that. I thanked him about a dozen times. I think it made his day too, he was just beaming. My mom said that B is still walking around with his business card.

  • AWw, I'm sorry :(

All kids are diff though.  My first DD cries hysterically for every shot, and she's never had a blood draw.  She even got hysterical with the flumist.. yea.  She has thrown up from crying, plenty of times.

DD2 had to have a blood draw at 20ish months because of a peanut allergy reaction.  The phlebotomist was awesome.. but I think it was partly DD's personality too.  The lady did itsy bitsy spider up DD's arm and was so gentle and did her best to distract her, and DD didn't even cry.  That being said, my older daughter would have been FLIPPING OUT hysterically.  At least it's over :)

  • Aw, poor B! R's first one was kind of bad, second at 2 was a breeze. The lab on Elmgrove Park (ACM) was really good.

Such an awesome story about the man.....glad he was there!
