I worked up the energy to open my container of puffs the other day to attempt to give him something solid.
I kid you not I managed to break/mutilate the poor puff (ONE measly puff) into SIX pieces. I know he should be eating more finger foods, but I can't get over my fear! He has 4 teeth all the way in, 2 1/2 way in, and the front teeth ready to pop in any minute. I just have this irrational fear that I can't get over. Am I the only one?
Re: I'm terrified of finger foods
Have you put a puff in your mouth? Try it. It might help to alleviate some of your fears.
We started finger foods regularly a few weeks ago. At first, she ignored them, played with them, threw them on the floor (score for the dogs!) but now she has the hang of them for the most part. I give her some puffs, lil crunchies, and yogurt melts, but I'm getting more into giving her fruit now. She loves peach slices and watermelon chunks. Both are really soft and she does well with them.
By the time she is 10 months I hope to be feeding her whatever we are having for dinner.
The fear is totally normal. I actually watched some BLW videos that showed babies gagging a bit as their gag reflexes kicked in, and that helped to calm my nerves a little and be aware of the difference between gagging an choking.
I had this fear also, but I realized I had to get over it--I can't give her milk and pureed foods forever! The puffs were our forst foray into solids (other than "Stage 3 foods"), and now she is a champion eater. We have given her pieces of turkey and carrots from turkey noodle soup, lunch meat, cheese, lots of crackers, sweet potato fries, waffles (which I highly recommend as a "first food:), chicken nuggets, green beans, and hummus. She has even sampled split pea soup and gingerbread.
I freak out everytime we give her something new, but she needs to learn to chew and try new things. Don't worry--it will get easier!
I think it is fairly normal to have a fear of the baby finger foods.
DD loves to feed herself, so I am constantly giving her puffs. She does like to feed them to the dogs, but most make their way into her mouth. Can you try the Mum-Mum rice crackers. We started those before the puffs because I think they mush up even faster. You can break them into smaller pieces to start and eventually just hand over the whole cracker.
It is scary, but once you see that LO is getting the hang of it, it does get easier. DD pretty much gets EVERYTHING we eat now, except the honey. I'll cut it up for her and she'll go to town. I'll also give her full saltine crackers and she does really well with them. Start small and work your way up.
