Sudden Weight Loss Concerns

so since about 17 weeks I have been gaining weight pretty steadily. Up until last week I had gained about 8 pounds total. However, these past three days I have been losing weight really quickly (a pound a day). I'm kind of starting to get worried. I have changed my diet. I still eat about the same amount, but I have been making healthier choices. I also have started drinking a lot more water and I am back to a regular exercise routine which I had neglected over the holidays. I have an OB appointment Next Tuesday. Should I wait until then to consult my OB or call the office sooner?

Re: Sudden Weight Loss Concerns

  • You say you are drinking a lot more water. That in itself can cause pretty rapid weight loss, especially if you are replacing fruit juices, soda, etc. Mention it to your doc, but be sure to also mention the lifestyle change.

^This. Also, if you were over weight pre-pregnancy, it's not uncommon to have a smaller weight gain. Remember, too, weight can fluxate by a couple of pounds just by stepping on the scale 5 times in a row, or moving it to a different tile on the floor.

  • It sounds like you are just flushing all the bad stuff you ate over the holidays out of your system I wish I could get back into doing that. If you were eating a lot of salt and now your not then you could be retaining less fluids too which would result in weight loss.

  • Give your doctor a call, but I'm sure the combination of healthier eating and exercising is what's contributing.  Just ask about how much weight loss is healthy at this point.  They may have you add in some healthy calories to make up for what you are loosing, but as long as you and baby are fine then I doubt it's a big deal.

I am FINALLY not getting sick everyday and can tolerate food so I'm hoping that I can get into more healthy eating habits and back to exercising a few times a week too!

  • I wouldn't be worried.  During my first pregnancy and even this one, but weight flucutates dramatically.  (5-7 lbs plus or minus within a few days.)  Unless you feel sick or something, it's probably fine.

  • I wouldn't call.  I'd just wait and see what the OB says at the next appointment.  I'm sure you get weighed every visit.  OB should mention something if s/he is concerned.  If not, just bring it up.

I'm only up about 3 pounds so far.

  • I lose 5 lbs every weekend, then it goes back up through the week, then back down

  • I wouldn't worry about it at this point.  You said you are eating healthier, drinking more water and exercising more.  Makes sense to me that you would be loosing some wt.  I would discuss it with OB at next appt.  Best of luck!!!
