Has anyone delivered at Maple Grove Hospital?

Did you have a good or bad experience?

I delivered at North Memorial in Robbinsdale with ds#1, and delivered at Abbott with ds#2, but Maple Grove Hospital is much closer than both of those so I am thinking of switching perinatologists and delivering at Maple Grove instead because of it's proximity (and my good experience I had with the Robbinsdale one).

Thoughts? Thanks!

  • I delivered there back in January of 2010. It was awesome. I wouldn't go anywhere else. The food was great, the nurse were awesome and I had a great experience there. I would highly recommend you going there!

  • I delivered DD at Maple Grove in Feb 2010 and liked it, but to be really honest, I just delivered DS at Southdale and liked it much more. However, Maple Grove is a very nice hospital with great rooms and all the perks. The food was decent and the on demand movies were nice, although I didn't really watch too many. Something about a very long induction and then pure exhaustion. Big Smile

  • I was planning on delivering DD at Maple Grove, but ended up delivering her 2 months early (pre-e) and had to have her at North Memorial in Robbinsdale.  The L&D team at North Memorial in Robbinsdale was absolutely fantastic, and I would recommend that everyone deliver their baby there due to the amazing nurses.  Keep in mind that Robbinsdale has a level III NICU while Maple Grove can only handle full-term babies with zero issues.  While I'm sure your pregnancy is fine and your baby will be healthy, I know that I will always deliver at a hospital in the future with a level III NICU just in case something happens, you never want to be separated from your baby in different hospitals if something occurs after birth - Maple Grove can't handle any potential issues with a newborn.

  • I do have to mention one thing. I was SO looking forward to delivering at Maple Grove and on the night I went into labor they were diverting and I ended up at Robbinsdale which I hadn't even toured because I was adamant that I WOULD deliver at Maple Grove.. Now my midwives office has pulled out of Maple Grove and is delivering at Abbott after asking why I go some not so rosy stories. It seems as of recently because of how "swanky" the hospital is it is obviously very popular and it seemed like they had some major staffing issues with alot of women getting diverted (and even a story of a woman delivering basically in the hallway).. Now I'm not saying that this will happen to you, and the times I went there with issues in my last pregnancy I never experienced anything like that but did just want to share that perspective. I really don't believe they would have gone as far as pulling out of Maple Grove and losing half of there clients if there hadn't been real issues.

  • I delivered my first daughter at Maple Grove with Oakdale OBGYN Sept. 2010 and loved it!! The rooms are beautiful, my delivering doctor was unfortunately not my OB I had throughout my pregnancy, but ultimately loved her anyway. My nurses were great, extremely helpful.. as mentioned the food was great, rooms are very comfy. And they also wheeled in a sleeper couch for my husband for our 3 days stay! I really really wish Oakdale was still in my insurance network, as I'd LOVE to deliver my next there. Unfortunately I'll be having to choose between Ridgedale Waconia or Southdale... Good luck!!

  • I delivered my son in September 2011 at Maple Grove and it was an awesome experience. The nurses were fabulous, there was always someone around to answer questions including breastfeeding consultants. The facilities were fantastic, the food was good, and it was a very quiet, private experience. I never heard or saw other babies really even though I know they were fairly full. I had been at a few other hospitals beforehand and was not impressed. I definitely plan on delivering there again.

  • Actually, the above comment on only being able to care for healthy newborns isn't true. MGH has a level II NICU and frequently cares for babies 30 weeks gestation and up. They have most of the equipment alot of level III's have including CPAP and vents. Many of the nurses have come from level III NICU's as well. The rounding physicians come from both fairview and north memorial.

As far as the story about the (north metro) midwives pulling out, it was because no OB group that is part of MGH wanted to back them. All midwives have to be backed by OB's for repairs, C/S's, etc that midwifes can't do. Abbott had a group that would back them, that's why they went there.

MGH is a wonderful hospital, but it was built as a small community hospital that ended up being #2 in MN on number of deliveries last year. The biggest issue is space and they are currently under construction expanding many areas. Staff are constantly being hired as well.
