Membrane stripping question

How badly does it hurt? I've never had it done before. My doc is talking about stripping mine on Friday (I'll be 39w4d) because I tend to go overdue. I would rather go into labor myself rather than have another induction (I was induced @ 42w last time) and am considering letting him strip them when I go in for my appointment on Friday.

Re: Membrane stripping question

  • I had it done last Wednesday.  It seriously lasted less than 30 seconds (thereabouts).  She basically stuck some fingers up there (I don't know how many) and it was uncomfortable and it did make me wriggle up/off the table a bit from pain but before it got to be too bad it was over.  It was like a really uncomfortable pap smear, imo.

I mean, I guess it depends on how long they do it for too.  This was my first internal (aside from one I had at an L&D scare around 29 weeks) so I don't know what's standard.

  • Thanks! I normally wouldn't even have it done, I just DON'T want another induction!

  • I can tell you that IT VARIES from person-to-person.  I've had some people tell me it's no big deal at all.  I have a high tolerance for pain and when I had it done, it really hurt!  I was also working through the acute symptoms of HELLP syndrome when I had it done, but I was taken aback, thinking it wouldn't hurt at all, but.it.did!  I'm a fan of going into things thinking the worst so I'm either fully prepared or pleasantly surprised  ;-)  Lol.  GL!

LOL, I tend to go into things thinking they will be terrible, too. I do have a pretty high pain tolerance, but you just never know. Thanks!
