Mucus plug and contractions and work

I think I've read that you don't need to pass the mucus plug to have contractions, is that what you've heard as well?  I am not convinced I am having contractions, and they certainly aren't regular if I am, but I am not at all pleased that I am at work today.  I can feel my belly getting tight, but it doesn't hurt at all so I'm here wondering if I'm going to make it through the day or end up having real contractions and waiting for DH at the train station because I need him to come home early.

Another random question...I am planning to work until the baby shows up, but how do you decide day to day if you're going to work?  I'm a teacher and my long term sub has been assigned, but I can't call her in unless I'm not coming back.  I have 5 working days left...:(

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: Mucus plug and contractions and work

  • I have that tightening of the belly with no pain- it's Braxton Hicks. So they are a good sign (your body is prepping for the labor), but not a sign you're going into labor atthisverysecond... If that makes sense.

I've lost my mucous plug (multiple times, or it's just taking a long time to fully get lost), and I haven't really had any true contractions. Some cramping, but nothing else.

And as for when to take off, I am just going to play it by ear. They are not bringing in a replacement, so the day I tell my boss "I'm out", that's all I have to do. Makes it a bit easier for me...

  • i had contractions at 32 weeks, 3 minutes apart and didn't even know it. i had them again at 35.5 weeks and felt them - bad. both times ended up with a L&D visit and a shot or two of trip to stop them.

but i've never lost my mucus plug yet. i've been having contractions again since about 5 yesterday, but they aren't regular, by a long shot. so here i am sitting at work too! mine started out last night with just tightening, however - then the menstrual cramping started and that progressed into reaching into my back.

as for the work thing, i'm doing the same. i'm not a teacher (i'm the help desk for a program), so i can't really help you there - but i talked to my boss about it, and as of now i just prep her at the end of the day on what issues i'm working on and where i'm at with everything, and i made her a binder of where all our important documents are and printed her out a desk procedure so if i do go suddenly, she's ready. so, i just keep coming. i made a promise to myself i would work until he's here so i get as much time with him, so that kind of helps me make it up in the mornings where i just want to give in a say "eff" it and stop working. the more time i work, the more time i get with him after he's here is how i look at it.

    sorry for the ramble! lol.

  • I was just at the dr an hour ago having a nonstress test.  It showed I was having contractions and even that they were regularly timed (at 10 min apart); however, they weren't painful...just a "tightening" sensation for me.  Based on the fact that they were nothing more than a tightening with my cramping pain, they sent me on my way and told me to call if they became painful AND were regular.  If you're just having tightening and they aren't regular, it's Braxton Hicks.  You need cramping pain + regular intervals in order for it to perhaps be the real deal.  The not knowing is the hardest part!!!

GL and G-d Bless!  I made it to 38w 2d and I bailed on work.  I just couldn't pull it off anymore!  My back feels SO much better when I'm not at work.
