We just did this.... And found that even though ours was advertised as a convertible crib, it just meant that the front and back coud be used as headboards with a full size frame.... Not a toddler bed. We took off the front and realized that's where the legs were attached!!! So needless to say, it shifted forward on the ground when we took the front off. Were ghetto though and just put a wood block under each front corner, it's hidden with the bed skirt and put a rail up. Its perfect!
Your crib will have to be a "convertible crib." As Greeneyes mentioned, some are not meant to be taken apart. We have a crib that converts to a toddler bed, not a full bed. We took off the front and bought a cheap mesh rail. It's worked great! FWIW, a mesh rail is not supposed to be used on a crib. It's only meant to be used on a bed with a box spring. Our rail is locked under the metal suppport & its super secure. He's been in for 1.5 years with no issues.
