2nd Trimester

Who remembers my "Heavens to Betsy" post about...

my teenage cousin having the baby? I made it last week and I talked about how she didn't know what a baby registry was, cried because she didn't miscarry in her first trimester, thought she didn't need a crib and the baby could sleep in his car seat, etc.?

Well, here's the latest and greatest...

She had decided months ago to name him James Brian. Awesome. Nice, normal, traditional name. Tonight she posted on Facebook that she had come up with a new name!!  *Squeee*

She's now going to name that poor child Calcifer after a demon of fire in some Japanese anime cartoon she saw earlier this week. I tried to talk her out of it, but she won't listen to me. She says if kids make fun of him she will just take him out of school and home school him (I have no issue with home schooling just so we're clear), and regarding what will happen when no one will take him seriously as an adult because of his ridiculous name...she says that he doesn't need any job that would discriminate against him based on his name, so it won't matter.

I'm just at a loss for words with this one. Welcome to the family little Calcifer!

  • Oh my! That poor child.  I have a nice who is the same age and about a week ahead of me in her pregnancy.  She lives at home with her parents, dropped out of college, and was fired from her job... And the father also comes from a welfare family and just got out of prison.  (I have nothing against families who need assistance, as a social worker I'm well aware of the trials families face... However when they knowingly abuse the system I get angry.)

I ended up giving my niece a long heart to heart talk about the good that adoption is, being adopted myself I was able to give a little proof. I know she intends to keep the child and my talk probably didn't do anything... Its just frustrating to see this road being travelled and not being able to do much to stop it.

I had the same talks with my cousin. My husband and I both did, actually. He is adopted. We even offered to let her come live with us throughout her pregnancy, help her with the adoption process, and let her live with us basically rent free after she had the baby as long as she was in college. She turned all of that down because her own mother said she would disown her completely if she gave her child up for adoption.  My family is full of a bunch of ignoramuses.

  • To support her you must watch "Howls Moving Castle" which is where the name comes from. It's actually a really good cute movie. The name though, could be worse. She is like what 17??

She just turned 18 last month.

How could that name be worse?  I guess, to be fair, she could be naming him Turdknocker or Penisface. Those might be worse.

I am talking more like it could be worse in the fact that it could be something badly spelled or made up. Calcifer, though fairly bad. It does have some normal nick names. Plus I did like the character from the movie. I would never name a child this. Maybe a dog or cat.

This made me laugh sooo hard..."penisface or turdknocker.."

  • I love the character Calcifer, he is so sweet, but that is what we plan to name our next cat, NOT our next child.

I've taught a lot of kids with a lot of unusual names, and that one would make me smile in a good way. I would have a hard time resisting praising him with "I like your spark!".

There is no guarantee that a kid will or won't be teased/hired because of his name. In the right circle, it could get him positive attention that he wouldn't otherwise get. DH has an unusual name and he likes it.

That said, hopefully someone will be able to get her to tone it down a little.

We have a family friend who wanted to abort her pregnancy because she was 19, with a total loser, and had drank heavily throughout the first tri of her pregnancy. Her parents refused to "allow" her to not have the baby and the poor thing was born with with a hole in her heart, has had 2 open heart surgeries in her young life of 4 years, is living in a filthy basement suite with a mother who is floundering and a father who willingly took a layoff at his job because he thought it would be cool to get paid for not working for a month.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened if her parents had not made her make a certain decision. And she is such a difficult child that they barely ever watch her or help out with her.

So, sorry to hijack your thread, I just wanted to throw my two cents in about parents MAKING their young adult children make certain choices about the rest of their lives.

Bahahaha! I seriously peed myself a little laughing at his name. I loved how at the bottom it says he changed his name to this in october. Well, luckily he was arrested for drug charges so you know why he has the funky name.

OK, you're right. It could be worse.

  • She's young. She will change her mind. I honestly think she said that to see what reaction she would get. I bet she will be coming up with other crazy ideas.

I don't know your cousin, but what I do know is teenagers. I am a high school teacher and also studied child and adolescent psychology. It sounds like she is not taking her pregnancy seriously. In all honesty, what 17 (or however old she is) year old would now-a-days, especially with shows on like Teen Mom. The great thing is that sooner or later, she will have no choice but to take her condition seriously.

I suggest to stop giving into her behavior. She wants attention above the kind she will get for simply being a teen mom. I bet she thinks that others are assuming that this is just something she will mess up on. You can give her advice and support, but by no means should you offer ways for her to raise her child. That would make her act out more. Remember, she is just a child still.

  • I remember your heavens to betsy.

My husband wanted to name our baby Aldric. It sounds super weird to me and he defiantly lost that arguement.

On facebook a girl just named her daughter Sakura which is also off anime.

There was also a thing on xbox live where if someone was to give birth on the day a certain game came out and named there baby after the main character of the game, they would get free games or something like that forever. I dont remember the name but it was a weird one. Some people did it.

In all fairness to that girl though, Sakura might be a name from an anime but it is also the Japanese word for cherry blossom (which are really rather beautiful trees) and is currently a rather popular Japanese name.
