C-sections

This may get asked on this board 9 times a day....

Sorry if this is a commonly asked question!  I had a full laperotomy surgery to remove a benign ovarian tumor in June.  They didn't cut my uterus, so I can have a vaginal birth and I am not far enough along to have to make a decision based upon the size of the baby.

I was wondering anyway, I plan to breastfeed.  Can I take the pain meds after the potential c section and still breastfeed?

  • Yes you should still be able to breastfeed.

  • Yes, you should be able to breastfeed while on pain meds.

  • I have been taken ibuprofen (800 mgs) as needed since my c-section with no issue when it comes to breastfeeding.  My doctor gave me a narcotic but I have deceided not to take it since the ibuprofen has been working for me... Just take it before the pain really sets in...

  • I had percocet and 600mg ibuprofen, I had no issues with breastfeeding. I am still going strong. Definitely take your pills before the pain hits you. I still take the ibuprofen as needed.
  • I received narcs but did not take them because I could handle the pain without them and I was nervous about breastfeeding even though they assured me I could take them.

The major problem I had was sitting up to breastfeed especially in the middle of the night.  The boppy was a lifesaver.  I also perfected feeding her while laying on my side.

  • Yes, although I was not given any narcotics after my c section. However, I did ask the OB that prior to surgery and they said it was safe.

  • Nope, you have to sit in pain. Just kidding. Of course, it's safe to take the pain meds and breastfeed.

  • The docs will only give you meds that are save to BF with if that is your plan. I had Percocet and Ibuprofen, and I didn't use all of either prescription.

  • I'm going to say something not to scare you, but to give you a heads up. Something I wish someone would have told me.

Firstly, yes, like everyone said, you can have pain meds. And you should also take something like gas-x or whatever, because you never knew how bad a fart could hurt until you've been opened at the abdomen!

Secondly, after a woman has a baby her uterus needs to slowly contract down to a normal post-baby size. When babies suckle at mama that helps trigger the contracting of the uterus. A c/s mama's ute has an incision on it. This means that it may hurt like hell when you first nurse your baby. I literally sat there sobbing in pain. Had I known it would have hurt so bad I would have timed it with the meds better. So... now you know. [Also, my baby ended up in the NICU so I was up there and probably missed some pain meds because I just wanted to be with him.]

And third, it can be difficult for some women to breastfeed in the typical cradle carry position because of the healing incision and weight of baby. Boppy pillows are good, but I preferred the annoyingly named "Breast Friend" pillow because it provided back support and stayed in place.
