Neither my H or myself have been in a few years, but we want to try and take a short trip in February or March. Any recommendations for resorts?
Previously we went to a place in Colorado, but I think Utah or New Mexico might be closer.
Re: Does anyone here ski?
are you gonna fly? if so, i'd still recommend colorado, just because it's cheaper (and sometimes easier) to fly into.
We did Winterpark there and it was fine. I don't have any other US ski resorts to compare it to though.
Thanks! I think we're going to try and squeeze this in a 3 or 4 day weekend, so we'll definitely be flying so that we don't waste two of our days driving. That's a good point about Colorado being easier to fly into even though NM might be closer.
it's been YEARS but when i lived in idaho we went snowboarding in colorado, utah and idaho/wyoming (grand tetons). out of the three my favorites in order would be the grand tetons, then utah, then colorado. for colorado, we went to brekenridge. i've also been to steamboat springs, which is nice.
for utah, we really like snowbird or brighton.
the grand tetons were awesome as well -- never snowboarded anywhere where there was so much powder. absolutely wonderful!! the resorts were less crowded as well, which was nice. you can stay at the grand targhee which is really close to one of my favorite towns, jackson hole, wyoming. the only downfall of here is that it's definitely not as easy to get to as either colorado or utah.
Check the snow reports - we went skiing in New Mexico in February once and it suuuuuuucked because it got too warm and the snow melted and turned to ice. That said, my favorite skiing evereverever has been in Taos, NM.
If NM is out, you can always check out Colorado & Utah. We skiied Park City, UT once and it was nice. Probably the coldest place I've ever gone skiing. Colorado has tons of great places: Winter Park and Steamboat are probably my favorites. Breckenridge is fun too - it's where I learned to ski.
A friend of mine from HS used to always go up to Montana every year - supposedly the skiing is pretty great up there.
I have always been desperate to hit up Whistler in Canada but that's probably a bit far for a short trip.
This. We have a cabin in Angel Fire so I am slightly biased, but I looooove it up there. Angel Fire, Taos and Red River are three ski resorts that are close together. If you went up there, you could have a change of scenery without having to drive super far. Angel Fire is in the middle of them all and has a resort at the base of the ski lift, however, Red River is a more "happening" town with more to do when you are not on the slopes. But if you stayed in Angel Fire, Red River is only about a 30 minute drive away and Taos is about an hour away, so totally able to go back and forth in a day.
Another NM option that is not far from Austin (about an 8ish hour drive) is Ruidoso in southern NM. There is a casino resort not far from the slopes which can make for some fun times at night.
I've only skied in CO and NM. DH's favorite of all the places he's been is Brighton.
Taos was too hard for me. I'm beginner/ intermediate- we've been skiing about 6-7 times- and after half day on the slopes I was done. DH and DSS are good skiers and they weren't enjoying it, either. We checked out and abandoned our passes.
We went to Red River from there are it was awesome. There were slopes for all of us. The only down side was it's a pretty small town and resort so lines can get long on the slopes and in the restaurants.
Durango, CO was good skiing.
Wolf Creek skiing near Pagosa Springs, CO has been my favorite overall. It's a big park with all difficulty levels.
