Ella update/? about HFM..... (long)

HFM question first - how long are they contagious for? I am just wondering when it is ok to send Ellie back to school? When all the blisters are gone?

Ella update: First thank you to everyone who has offered help and suggestions, I really appreciate it. She is on meds (ExLax, Miralx, Lactolouse, Magensium Sulfate as well as enemas/suppositories) and we are under the care of a GI and awaiting admitance into a toileting clinic provided by a behavioral psychologist and GI team. We also are going for a second opinion @ Children's in Boston at the end of this month.

So Ellie's GI was on call this weekend. I called the office yesterday after my post to talk to him. He was willing to admit her, but hearing about the procedure that would be used to clean her out I was worried it would be way to invasive and cause more harm than good in her situation (side note medical tests have been run,....barium xrays, regular xrays, upper gi as well as blood tests for other medical issues such as FA, celiacs, chrons, as well as checking her thyroid) everything checks out fine. He was comfortable with letting us try some more at home remidies and if she did not go by 7pm he was going to admit her to begin the process. Thankfully, 2 suppositories created some movement and we avoided the stay.

He called back this AM to check on her and talk about what our next steps are. She was officially dx with FTT and encoperosis (sp) the FTT dx was more so to help with insurance about the # of visits as well as get her into the toileting clinic faster.

She went two more times this morning. We must look like loons; the screaming, the clapping etc. It takes two of us to hold her down while she poos, other wise she lies her body pretty much down, crosses her legs and holds it in. holding her down makes me feel like it is more harm than good, but the Gi feels if it is the only way we can get her to go, we have to do it.  The second time she went today she went all by herself, which is a huge improvement.

So now we wait. Hopefully we get into the clinic asap. He still would like to admit her next week, if this continues but we would like to avoid that at all costs. I asked if their were other options for the cleanout (while being admitted) and unfortunately the invasive way is the only way.

Thanks again for all the help, etc. I really appreciate it!

  • I can't answer the HFM question because when my kids had it they were too young for school/daycare.  Hope she heals quickly though! It's not a fun virus.

congrats on the poop breakthrough! Do what you gotta do to make her poop and then praise the heck out of her, right!?! Sounds like it's working.

What is FTT? I'm not very good with abbreviations.

  • Wow L - that is unreal that all this is going on. Our friend's son has issues like this but it has never got this far. They do go nuts every time he won't go but they have never been referred anywhere. They just keep telling them it's behaviorial.  I am sorry : (

  • So glad she went today!  I hope you get into the toileting clinic soon.
  • I'm sorry you're dealing with all of this!

DD has had severe problems with her BMs since she was three. I've been where you are as far as the testing, treatments, literally holding your child down and forcing them to go, etc. It really, really sucks watching your child basically cause herself pain in an attempt to avoid using the bathroom. DD used to do things like hide in the corner or refuse to sit down for hours at a time.

DD is seven and just this year became regular without the need for Miralax. Her issues seemed to have been mostly trauma related from the rape, so I'm no help on that front. Just want to send hugs and wish you luck. Hang in there!

  • We used to have to hold DD down. Now I give her a stool for her feet and the ipod.

Once a month it gets bad enough to where we need to do a suppository or enema.

Are her bm's soft or hard? Could she be lactose intolerant. My DD is and I think even processed lactose affects her.

And I just thought of something. Things got really bad when she started kindergarten because she couldn't wipe well enough because of the miralax and how messy it made it.  They were still helping her in pre-k. When she started K, she'd hold it all day long until she finally lost control to go. It wasn't hard, she just couldn't go. I bought her wipes for school and now we went back to giving her treats when she goes. She had a few accidents at school in the beginning of our new process, but things are much better, she still has issues once a month.

  • (((hugs))) Encoporesis sucks!  It is so mentally draining on everyone involved.  GL with the GI and toileting clinic.  Sounds like you have a great plan in place.
