Is it normal in your circle for LOs to be in classes?
DD takes music, swim, and gymnastics. We recently dropped swim for the semester because the water is way too cold and it isn't fun for mommy anymore. Plus, I don't want to be going outside in the cold with wet hair.
The older ladies at work think it's very odd for a toddler to be in classes, but to me it's "normal". Where do you stand on this?
Re: Does your LO take any classes?
It's not normal in my circle for a 12 - 24 month old to be in classes. My DD is in gymnastics and I plan to keep her in there. It's fun for her and is a good outlet for her energy. We did take swim classes last spring but I'm going to hold off on it this year. I know it surprised my mom and MIL when I mentioned the classes that she takes/has taken.
We did swim classes last summer when he was 15-16 months. But I am off work in the summer so it's much more doable. I think next summer we will do gymnastics (maybe swim again too). DH also takes him to the library for story/music time once a week.
Very normal. My kids have been in classes from the time they were 6 months old. I always started with Gymboree (gym and then additionally art), music (Wiggleworms at Old Town), and swimming.
Now my DD has 4 activities outside of going to preschool 3 days a week. My DS goes to a PDO once a week at my DD's school, and has 3 activities outside of that.
I'm a working mom, so classes are hard to come by that work with our schedule. However, we do yoga one evening a week. We also did a swim class last spring on weekends for a couple of months.
If I stayed home, I imagine that I'd like to do at least one class/week to network and meet other moms. However, financially I'm not sure we could afford much more than that. Classes are $$ in this area!
We've done a music class, and are considering whether to continue that, or switching to art or gymnastics.
With DD1, we did a music class, and once she hit 20 months, she went to a toddler class (on her own) where they did a craft, playtime, snack, etc. twice a week. We also did swimming.
I like all the options we have. It's something fun and interesting and new for the girls. With DD2, it's a good chance for some one-on-one time. And if they do a class without me, then I get a break, which is also nice.

DD's in swim classes and has been as soon as she was old enough. Swimming is a huge part of my life and it's important to me that she learns to swim sooner rather than later.
I'd like to sign her up for gymnastics, but that's more for an activity for us to do during the day. (I SAH.)
I guess to answer your question, it depends on if mom or dad SAH. If someone's at home all day with the little one it makes sense to me to have a bunch of activities scheduled. It gives the parent and the LO some sort of routine and socialization experience. If both parents work and the child is in day care all day it seems a little excessive to me, but that's just IMO.
