My husband is stationed up there and we are about to move once he gets back from this deployment. We have a baby due in May and my question is...Should I be trying to stock up on long sleeve outfits for all year round? I know it can get up to 70 degrees in the summer but it was snowing by August this year?!? All the stores are putting out summer gear already. DH says that even though it is cold up there that is doesn't SEEM that cold...but still, it's a baby right?
Any suggestions? Have you ever been stationed there?
Re: Fort Wainwright, AK and Baby clothes.
They say always put an extra layer of clothes on babies than you would put on yourself, or at least I did and will do that again. But, I have no idea about that area. Most bases have a FB page and you could always go ask on the page. If there is not try a web page. They usually have a "newcomers" link that has a lot of information.
I went ahead and found the webpage for you. https://www.wainwright.army.mil/sites/local/#
I have looked at the facebook page and I tried to talk to out FRG lady and she was kinda mean to me. But I take things personally and she just kept asking why I wasn't up there already and if I really supported my husband. And that is why I don't like FRG. A ton of women in a group together is almost never a good thing.
I've found stuff for the older kiddos and already ordered the -30 below snowsuit for school next year. But nothing about summer and newborns. But I think the extra layer thing is good. At least everything is on sale.
We are stationed at Wainwright now. My husband has been here since March and we didnt get here till August thanks to the people who kept losing our paperwork. It really doesnt feel as cold as it is. We were wearing short sleeve shirts till it got to the 40's around October. My daughter had just turned 6 month, she is 10 months now, when we first got here and was able to wear short sleeve onesies till halfway through September. What I have learned in the few months we have been here is to have things you can layer. Right now I usally have a thin long sleeve shirt, I got a bunch at The Childerens Place on sale before I left NC, and then put a onesie or some other shirt on her with a pair of jeans and socks and booties. But it is hoovering around -40 right now. I met a girl when I first got here that lived here her whole life and she told me to layer, have a fleece blanket, and for the really little ones a cozy cover(wal-mart like $30.00) for the car seat. With the cozy cover they can wear just about anything and be fine. I had my daughter in a onesie and a pair of socks one day we went out and she was sweating by the time we got back with the cozy cover on. We bought boots and snow suits and all this thick bulky clothing and have really yet to use it. We put her snow suit on her the day we went to the ice park up here but thats it. As far as the spring weather, I cant say for sure but Im sure it will be like it was in September and October, which was chilly but not too bad. We went hiking one day in September and it was nice and warm when we left but by the time we got to the top of Birch Hill I had to put a sweater on her. I just always make sure I have a warm hat and blanket with me, and she does fine. And as far when you get here there's not many places to shop for a little one. We have Wal-mart, Fred Meyer( I say its like a Super Target), Old navy and sears. The best place I have found is a baby re-sale/consignment store that is like 2 miles from the front gate. Hope this helps. We bought alot of clothes for the cold and cooler weather but I always just end up using the same pieces over and over. I wish I had saved the money and bought a stroller that rolls good in the snow instead :-) And as far as the lady being rude, its not just her. Alot of the ladies up here are rude or mean. Just makes it better when you find someone thats not and will smile back when you do.
Do you know if you will be living on base or off? My husband got our house in July and he said it was hot. The houses we are in dont have A/C so in the summer is just open windows and fans to cool the house. And even in the winter it still can be toasty in the house. Not sure about the houses off of base. So it does get pretty hot, it got in the 80's last summer I believe. So prepare for that too. Let me know if you want to know anything else. Even with my husband already up here I would have loved to have any and all info I could get before I got up here. His thoughts about up here are totally different than what a womans with or without kids would be.
Thank you so much! Thats really what I needed to hear! I was in limbo on to go ahead and spend the money here or wait until I am there.
We hope to live on post. I really really want to live in the Denahli neighbor hood, I think that's the name of it. Southern Cross looks nice too. I just hope the wait isn't that long.
We have one other friend that is up there now and she loves her on post house, the heated floors and garage are a plus! I just hope the wait isn't that long.
I'm in Anchorage so not QUITE as cold as Fairbanks but I dress my kids pretty normally when we're out and about. Layers and hats but not big heavy snowsuits or coats (unless we're out playing in the snow). I do have more long sleeves and pants than summer stuff obviously, but Anchorage doesn't get as warm as Fairbanks for the summer months. We hover around 60 on average which is warm compared to winter but not hot by any means.
And ditto the PP, there's always an over abundance of winter gear in the consignment stores up here. I'd imagine especially in the military community where people are coming and going you'd be able to find a decent selection.
This is number 3 and he is an E7 so I know we can *could* get it, I just don't know how long the wait is. I know I have a friend that said South Paw had some 4 bedroom openings. I won't sit around and wait for Denali but it sure would be nice.
Thank you all for your help! It makes it a lot easier.
