Screw you, 3 Hr GTT!!!

So this week I had my 3 hr test. The first time I went to take it, the lady (who spoke hardly any english) drew my blood, at 8:30 am. I waited for an HOUR before asking her why I hadn't had the Glucola drink yet. She wouldn't give a cohesive answer, just saying "I'm waiting on that." At 10 am, after having been there for 2 hours already, I asked again and she said "yeah, we can go ahead and start now."  I said "Yeah, that's not gonna happen, because this has just turned into a FIVE HOUR test. We'll have to reschedule. I'll be back in two days."  To which she responded "Well, next time, maybe you not make an appointment if you don't have the time." In not so many words, I told her it wasn't the fact that I didn't have time, it was a) the fact that I was STARVING and nauseous and b) that she screwed up the test.

Anywho, I go back to take the test and of course its the same woman. She wants to make small talk...blah blah blah, whatever. You better believe I was in her face every 10 minutes after she took my initial draw asking her about the drink. At least this time it was only a 4 hour test. Sweet Jesus.

I know from my initial draw results, its not looking good, but I'm fed up with everyone involved with this stupid thing, so I'm currently bathing in the fresh scent of homemade vanilla ice cream and everyone else can shove it.

  • Wow, that sucks! I'm sorry you had that experience. That seems very strange. For my 3 hour, she gave me the drink as soon as she took the first draw. I was very negative that my results would come back positive for GD after my 1-hour, but they came back and said only one of the 3 hours was high and that I was okay in their opinion. Good luck to you!

  • Ugh, how horrible! What a weirdo, and so unprofessional, to boot! Enjoy your ice cream and I'll cross my fingers you get good results! I'm still waiting on mine from last Wednesday!

  • Ummm, yeah she f-up that test.  I also would have called your OB after the first screw up.  And I hate to say it but you may have to retake the test since she didn't administer it the right way.

The 3 hour GTT is supposed to be a fasting blood draw, pretty much immediately dink the glucola (finished with in five minutes), and then blood draws at 1, 2 and 3 hours out (give or take a minute or two on the time points).

I agree with all of this. She screwed up royally and I would complain. I'm so sorry you went through that, she clearly had zero clue what she was doing.

  • Thanks everyone -- I really thought she was doing something majorly wrong because I went with my sister to do her GTT 2 times and BOTH were 3 hrs exactly. Draw, drink, draw, draw, draw...

I called my OBs office and they said that because my 1 hr was so high, they were waiting for the results of the fasting levels before I drank the Glucola. If its over 125, you can't have the drink, because it will put you dangerously high. However, the lab took their sweet time and didn't do anything with it for 40 minutes... I'll tell the doc tomorrow at my appointment, but I already told her I will decline if I have to do it again. I can't take it. I'd rather just change my diet to be on the safe side and forego that stupid lab tech.

(On top of all of her screw ups, she couldn't find my veins on the first try EVER. which has never happened to me... 11 pokes over the course of a 4 hr test!)

  • I would complain to her supervisor about how unprofessional she was! I don't care who you are, an appointment, is an appointment! I threw a fit at my high risk OBGYN appointment and I walked out because I waited 50 minutes to be seen. If you don't have time for me, then don't waste my time! It's rude and unprofessional!

I wouldn't put up with that at all!
