VBAC

December 30 our LO arrived

I typed/shared on a number of spaces...I'm on Dec 2011, PG over 35, VBAC, Natural, maybe even 3rd tri)...

Some of you may remember how I was seeking VBAC and had to fight and was worried about c-section or forced induction (that would then lead to c-section).  It was looking like it was going to happen...

Well, our little J.R. arrived on his own time...and the labor, while excruciating, was blissfully short (just a few hours)...It was not trackable at all (you know the whole 5-1-1 or 4-1-1 method), then all of a sudden settled in at a 1.5 minutes every 4 minutes...the doula just had time to arrive in our home and then escort us to the hospital for delivery (it was a *good* thing I ended up in the hospital as I ended up loosing quite a lot of blood).

However, I delivered, naturally, having arrived with contractions 1-2 minutes apart and 7-dilated/90percent effaced...they kept trying to put the external monitors but I kept knocking them off during the actual contractions...I also labored/delivered on my hands/knees, which they were none to pleased about...but I was having back and front labor.  The baby crowned and they held him in because there wasn't a doctor available..when they  pulled one in, the fellow broke the caul (which pisses me off to no end because the baby was already almost out).  They also refused to let DH cut the cord (and it wasn't supposed to be cut in the first place, but no one read the darned birthplan...and when we said wait, he said it was too dangerous for DH...which is a complete lie).  I had a 2nd degree tear, placental abruption (depending on who I ask) and wasn't allowed to hold my baby for 2 hours (in fact, they didn't so much as even show me the baby, they just took him, and my DH was pushed aside once he followed...eventually he took the baby and brought him to me to see while they were still pulling things out of me and stitching me up).

He was no where near the 10lbs they were using to justify the forced induction/c-section.  He was perfectly healthy.  Because I did everything naturally he was completely awake/aware for quite a bit of time, and I was able to nurse right away (he did wonderful!).  I also wasn't ever hooked up to anything and was able to walk around within a couple of hours to use the bathroom (got into trouble for not ringing the nurse to take me...but no one told me not to...wasn't hooked up to anything because they didn't have time and because I wasn't on any of their drugs/pain killers...so I just got up when I felt the urge to go).

They were going to discharge me the following morning (he was born at night) and I asked to stay an additional day...and am glad I did because apparently there was quite a bit of placenta still inside me (again, depending on who I asked..another person felt that it was the back end of the amniotic sac)...which had been causing me pain the entire time until it passed.  I was a bit miffed that no one on the floor when I called for help (OMG, I thought I was passing an organ through my vag*na) could identify it...I mean, they work on the labor and delivery ward...shouldn't they know parts?

The baby and I came home, and he absolutely refused to sleep in the crib, so we were pretty much thrust into co-sleeping (or shared sleeping, or whatever it is called...I never thought I'd even try it, and we're adjusting and loving it).  I swear to you, if I lay down, he's able to flip at 1 wk and 1 day from his back to his side thinking he's going to have a little meal or use the breast as a paci.

He's a great baby, good natured, sweet, beautiful...all the things you could want with a little bit of a demanding streak in  him, LOL.

  • Congratulations.. What an amazing way to do that the way you wanted it. No monitors, meds. Did they try to make you ???? Gives me hope for a Vbac.
  • Yay! Congrats, I've been wondering how your birth turned out! I'm glad you got your VBAC after all, that totally sucks about your DS being kept from you guys, and no one knowing you had some retained placenta.

RE: Cosleeping, it worked out really well to do it with my younger son when he came home from the hospital, we all got a ton more rest that way. Enjoy the new baby!!

They didn't try to make me take meds - they did put a hep-lock in just in case...however they constantly tried to do the monitors. The hospital did try to use the external monitors; however, because the contraction pain was so close together and so strong, I constantly was knocking the monitor belt off.  They really weren't successful at using them on me.

  • Congrats!  Glad you were able to VBAC. I think you need to talk to someone about your hospital experience though - sounds like you're a tad pissed off.
  • Wow, congratulations on your VBAC and new baby!. Sorry your hospital experience wasn't better:(
