2nd Trimester

Little freaked out about delivery!

I have many nieces and nephews and some friends that have had babies. Pretty much all most recently have had C-Sections due to reasons beyond their control. I started reading "Modern Girls Guide to Motherhood." Get to the part of having baby regular old way.. and i'm little freaked. No one talks about the pain after and does you body go back to the way it was down there?!?    I would like to have a regular childbirth if possible but i'm little freaked right now and want to keep this baby in there!

Any words of wisdom or advice?

  • I don't have experience with a vaginal delivery b/c I had a c-section the first time.  I think either way you give birth there are fears and worries.  In the moment though, you are so excited to see your LO you tend to forget about some of these things.

  • Yes, everything goes back to normal. At least H hasn't complained of it being any different.

And my pain was mostly from being both cut and torn, and because I had intense swelling for about 48 hours afterwards. But after about a week all pain was completely gone. I have no experience with C sections, but I would imagine the pain lasts for waaaay longer than that.

(And I should add that the pain was nothing that I couldn't handle, BF hurt worse. I took pain meds in the hospital but never bothered by the time I was home it was so mild. More of a discomfort than a pain).

  • Honestly recovery isn't that bad especially if you don't tear or have to have stitches. Both times my midwifes did a perinatal massage and stretched my cervix around lo head while they were being born and I never tore at all. With my 2nd son I had to deliver him when I was still only 7cm because his heart rate kept drooping and they were getting ready to prep me for a c-section I begged to be able to push while they set things up and the dr. was able to turn lo head a the last second and I delivered him with no problem.

I took some advil in the hospital to deal with the swelling and the pain of the contractions when ds first nursed but even that was only once or twice a day. Besides the pain is nothing once you hold your lo.

  • My experience was that it really wasn't that bad.  I did tear and had a few stitches.  I was quite swollen for awhile, but overall the pain wasn't that bad.  I never took anything stronger than Motrin for pain, and that was only for the first week or two.  After that things were tender for awhile, but eventually everything goes back to normal.

  • My husband has no complaints about down there after vaginally giving birth to our DD. Everything went back to the way it was in my experience.  The only issue I have is that I have a tilted uterus that made getting little one out a little more challenging (which resulted in tearing).  After 2 weeks I didn't have any more pain until four months after when my husband (who had been deployed) and I became intimate again (then it was like the first time all over again lol).  Don't worry to much.  This is your first not 20th so your body should recuperate just fine and c-section recovery is much more intense from what I am told and will experiance this time.  You can always do kegals to help recovery along.

  • I'm glad to see some people saying their experiences weren't that bad. I feel like people don't share the good experiences quite as often.  I had a very positive experience with DS.  Very slight tear that didn't require stitches. They kept asking me if I wanted pain meds but i had very little pain and didn't need meds.  Our bodies are made to do it.

I have to agree with this. I was starting to get a little anxiety about birth. Glad that it is not as horrible as some tend to make it. Thanks ladies!

  • :)

Everything goes back to normal for nearly everyone. I did have some pain after - mostly just stinging when I went to the bathroom. It lasted about two weeks, then I was pretty much fine. They'll give you tips for how to deal with that before you leave the hospital.

Don't worry, your body is designed for this! You'll be fine :)

  • I'll jump on the positive vibes bandwagon. My delivery was a lot easier than I expected, just different. No meds, so when I did tear I think getting stitches was the worst part because I could feel the needle. Yuck.

I felt like I had run a marathon or done thousands of crunches, because my abdomen was so worn out. That lasted a while as well as general exhaustion. As far as I know, everything went back to normal after the stitches. I can't say I've gotten a mirror and checked or anything...

  • If I may suggest a book, Ina May Gaskin's "Guide to Childbirth". It is full of useful information and may help with your anxiety. I skipped the first part, as I wasn't getting anything out of birth stories, but the second part was extremely helpful.

Also, my sister-in-law read Ina May's "Spiritual Midwifery" and found that it help sooth her prior to her first child.

Never forget, you have the strength and power to do this!
