WWYD- clicky

If you seemed to suddenly wake up with allergies (after 5+ years of no allergies) and can't stop sneezing and blowing your nose, would you take something? The catch is, you are almost 8 wks pregnant and trying to avoid medication at all costs.

I have a neti pot and might use it later (although it's never seemed to do much for me.) We just have some guys here working in the house and all the bathrooms are occupied at the moment.

  • I would try the neti pot or saline nasal spray before medication.

  • I wonder if maybe you're allergic to something that the guys are using or their cologne or something.  Maybe you could try to get outside for awhile and see if that helps.

    Good luck!

  • Congrats on living in Austin. I never had allergies until I lived here a few years. Allergies can actually develop overtime. Plus Cedar is out of control right now and mold is high today. It's like spore and pollen overload.

Also being pregnant you produce more mucus, everywhere. I would try Neti pot and saline first. Unless it becomes unbearable. If you lay down be sure to prop up your head. It will help with drainage. A warm wet rag on your face can help too. My dads favorite is eat something spicy. Ha.

  • Some people get pregnancy induced rhinitis.  I got it bad right at about 5 wks and it lasted all of my first tri.  I never had prior issues with allergies.  If I was miserable and couldn't sleep, I would take a benadryl.  It is category B which is about as safe as you can get as far as meds in pregnancy.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm actually feeling a little better on my own, but it's reassuring to hear everyone's thoughts. I had bad allergies to trees an grass until summer of 2006 when I started acupuncture and haven't had issues since.

Maybe it's pg induced, maybe it was morning pollen, maybe it was something the guys used. I'm just glad I'm a little better!

  • I would look up the safety of meds like allegra, zyrtec, claritin, etc and, if one of them is a Pregnancy Class B, I would try that. I'd also do the neti pot, for sure. Glad you are feeling better!

  • My OB cleared me to take plain Zyrtec (not zyrtec-d) as early as first tri. I catered our TTC plans around first tri not coinciding with cedar season, but she said even if I had failed at that, plain Zyrtec is ok. I've been on it nonstop since NYE.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Ditto. My dic approved just about every over the counter antihistamine. He is pretty big on no decongestants. If I get too bad Mucinex works great.
