Parenting after a Loss

Vent. SO NOT COOL..

My IL's intentionally bought LO ginormous toys for Christmas so they can see him open them.  They know we only have regular luggage to bring stuff back so they say they'll have it shipped.  SIL works PT at FedEx but it was still $50 to ship the REALLY large items.  SIL had also intentionally bought him a large gift but intended to pay for the shipping on her half.  She texted DH the tracking number and said, "$50.00"  DH was like, "so are our parents paying you for most of that?"  She said, "Nope, they just asked me to forward it to you."  Grrrr..

They're usually not like this!!!!!  They know how annoyed we get at them buying large things we can't take back on a plane with us, so I personally think they should pay for the shipping!

I am so annoyed right now.

Re: Vent. SO NOT COOL..

  • You have every right to be. That's rude. Can you tell them to leave the toys there for future visits? Or suggest they return them if shipping is too much of a hassle? They'll be pissed but maybe they'll get the picture and know you are on to their shenanigans?

I think this is a great idea.  It'd probably be easier & less confrontational to say that you'll leave the toys there for future visits.  If they say no we want him to play with it, then suggest they have the toys delivered to your house rather than theirs.

  • That's really annoying. You should not have to pay. I would call and say something like, "We can't afford to ship the toys, so do you have the receipt so we can return them and buy them again when we get back home?" then they can offer to pay the shipping or you can return the toys.

We've done this before with stuff they bought for us.  They bought us a metal outdoor TABLE one year!!!! They are incredibly generous but lacking in the common sense sometimes.  (LIke, they bought it at Sam's Club, which we don't have a membership for and we had to re-buy it in TX with someone else's membership...).

If they don't offer to pay for the shipping, we will be leaving everything for next time in the future.  So annoying.

SIL already shipped it this time.  Next time we'll suggest leaving it there...

  • I can relate. ILs are in CA, we're in GA. We fly coach, we pay for baggage. But, they loved getting gifts that took up a lot of room, and in most cases, the cost to ship back is 3x that of how much the gift cost.

It has gotten better, as we tell them that we have x amount of room in the suitcase. If it doesn't fit, then have it shipped to our house (everything is ordered off amazon anyways, so it's no additional cost), and wrap a photo of the gift.

  • Oh dude, that is way not cool that they did that to you.  They knew you had to fly, giving you bulky things for their own benefit is so uncool.  As another that has to fly to spend holidays with family I'd be pissed if one of our families did that.  Makes me very thankful that not only did our family go easy on the bulky stuff (mostly clothing and books) AND they shipped what wouldn't fit in our suitcase for us.

I definitely second the idea of having the bulky stuff stay at their place if they won't pay to ship.

  • That's something my IL's would TOTALLY do!  Unfortunately, instead my IL's come here (I hate when they come!). They come without gifts (because it is so hard to fly with them) and expect us to buy the gifts the girls want, wrap them, sign their names to the tags and then NOT pay us back for the gifts we bought for them to give to the kids.

  • This is the exact reason I got mostly gift cards at my baby shower(and wedding) cross country. Anything too big, I returned and rebought when I got home.

They should have thought ahead, you shouldnt have to eat the shipping. Sorry! That sucks
