Too much sleep?

I know everyone says that sleep leads to more sleep but it seems like when DD has several long naps during the day she cannot sleep as well as night. During the week she takes 3-4 45-ish minute naps and then at night she sleeps for 11 hours with only one 30 minute wake up. On the weekend I let her sleep on me (I know, bad habit... I'm working on it) and she is able to sleep for about two hours every nap. But then she wakes up multiple times at night and it is very hard to get her back to sleep. Has this happened to anyone else? It seems to happen almost every weekend so I'm pretty sure that is the problem. I am testing it today by waking her up at the hour mark for each nap. I'll see how she sleeps tonight.

Re: Too much sleep?

  • If my lo naps between 3-3.5 hours total for the day he sleeps good at night, waking once to eat and going right back down. If he sleeps more he wakes up a couple times and has trouble falling back to sleep.

  • This does happen if we take a long car ride and come back in the same day.  DH's parent are 2 hrs away so if she naps there and back the whole time sometimes it's too much sleep, but for the most part if she sleeps she is tired.  I would just put her in her crib and let her nap whatever she needs unless you feel she needs a long nap.  The other option is to plan for a long morning nap on you and the rest in her crib.  DD usually takes 45 min naps too, but most days during the week she has a nap that is 1.5-2 hrs like right now!!  It seems to happen more when DH is home with her and puts her down.  Don't know why though?

  • I find the same - if G sleeps more than 3.5 hours during the day he doesn't sleep as well at night at all.
