I was talking to a friend last night and learned that you don't have to work for the tribe or be a tribal member to use the really nice daycare on the reservation. The openings go to tribal members/employees first, but if there are still openings, anyone can use it. And you can make your own schedule if you're in college or work part-time, so I thought maybe this way Jared could go back to school sooner than we thought.
I just thought I'd check with you guys and see if $2.75/hour is comparable to what some of you are paying. A lot of moms on the WM board are in really high COLA areas, so I thought I'd ask here.
Of course, we'd have to drive out to the rez (which is only about 15 minutes each way), but Liam would get to learn the Umatilla language. The only Umatilla I use regularly is, "Tots Maywe"-- "Good morning." So, he'd be ahead of me in no time :-)
Let me know what you think :-)

You all are making my wallet jealous. We pay 251/week for 4 days. This is for a Phoenix School.
Yikes, I think we need to move!!! The center we started at was $400 a week and DD was going to be there from 8:30-3:30 each day. That would have worked out to just over 10 an hour.
We were very lucky and a SAHM who has watched our friend's twins since they were 3 months old (they are 4.5 now) was willing to take her on. She charges $5 an hour and it is money well spent. She also does not charge for any day we keep her home, snow days, vacations ('m a teacher), etc. But, we still pay her for all of those because we realize what a deal we are getting!
I say take it. Sounds like a great deal all around.
that's a good deal. our daycare requires us to pay for full time even though we only use it 3 days a week. If we used it 5 days a week, it figures out to $2.45/hr. with Amelia being in there 3 days/wk, we pay $4.05/hr. take it and enjoy... the 1 min drive it worth it
Thanks so much, Guys! I try to be really involved with the Native American community. I've taught "early college" (like dual enrollment high school/college) at the tribal high school and am on a festival committee where we have a Pow Wow and worked on the curriculum committee for tribal languages to be taught at our college, so I'm excited about it from the multicultural aspect, too.
The daycare center is called, ?taw Miy?na?ma, which is Umatilla for "precious children."
For me, the part that was super exciting is the opportunity to do "part-time" and only pay for the hours you use. That way, if Jared can take only MWF classes or TTh classes, we're not paying for full-time daycare.
Thanks again!

Oh, so cool! One of my former students who I still keep in touch with is from the Eagle Butte Reservation :-) Thanks so much for sharing that!
