Is $2.75/hour a reasonable daycare cost?

I was talking to a friend last night and learned that you don't have to work for the tribe or be a tribal member to use the really nice daycare on the reservation. The openings go to tribal members/employees first, but if there are still openings, anyone can use it. And you can make your own schedule if you're in college or work part-time, so I thought maybe this way Jared could go back to school sooner than we thought.

I just thought I'd check with you guys and see if $2.75/hour is comparable to what some of you are paying. A lot of moms on the WM board are in really high COLA areas, so I thought I'd ask here.

Of course, we'd have to drive out to the rez (which is only about 15 minutes each way), but Liam would get to learn the Umatilla language. The only Umatilla I use regularly is, "Tots Maywe"-- "Good morning." So, he'd be ahead of me in no time :-)

Let me know what you think :-)

  • I think that is an INCREDIBLE deal. Kind of makes me tear up, actually. When he was in daycare it worked out to $6 an hour. Writing the check was agonizing.

  • Ours works out to ~ $3.30/hr  ($710.00/month). I think $2.75/hr is a great rate.

  • That's what my day care works out to. I pay $125 a week for 5 days. She gets 9 hours there a day. $25 a day/9 hours = $2.77 an hour. :)

  • I think $2.75 is very reasonable!  It's about 1/2 the price I'm paying...go for it!

  • Yikes, I think we need to move!!!  The center we started at was $400 a week and DD was going to be there from 8:30-3:30 each day.  That would have worked out to just over 10 an hour.

We were very lucky and a SAHM who has watched our friend's twins since they were 3 months old (they are 4.5 now) was willing to take her on.  She charges $5 an hour and it is money well spent.  She also does not charge for any day we keep her home, snow days, vacations ('m a teacher), etc.  But, we still pay her for all of those because we realize what a deal we are getting!

I say take it.  Sounds like a great deal all around.

  • Yes...I just did the math for our daycare.  You have a good deal.

  • that's a good deal. our daycare requires us to pay for full time even though we only use it 3 days a week. If we used it 5 days a week, it figures out to $2.45/hr. with Amelia being in there 3 days/wk, we pay $4.05/hr. take it and enjoy... the 1 min drive it worth it

  • I have no idea about costs but that sounds awesome and I think it'd be so great that he'd be with kids from another culture!  So wonderful!!!  Good thinking looking into the reservation!!
  • You are kidding! I looked into daycare rates, for my 9 month old it would be $6.75 and my 4 year old, $5.25. I'd jump at the $2.75!
  • Thanks so much, Guys! I try to be really involved with the Native American community. I've taught "early college" (like dual enrollment high school/college) at the tribal high school and am on a festival committee where we have a Pow Wow and worked on the curriculum committee for tribal languages to be taught at our college, so I'm excited about it from the multicultural aspect, too.

The daycare center is called, ?taw Miy?na?ma, which is Umatilla for "precious children."

For me, the part that was super exciting is the opportunity to do "part-time" and only pay for the hours you use. That way, if Jared can take only MWF classes or TTh classes, we're not paying for full-time daycare.

    Thanks again!

  • Hey there, I live on the Cheyenne River Reservation in SD and the daycare center my daughter goes too is also $2.75 an hour.  VERY Reasonable!  I wish the other parents in the community would realize how fortunate we are to have great childcare at this rate.  We have a lot that Whine that it is too expensive...Yeah...Right...  Good Luck!

  • That is an amazing deal.  We have a great deal with our nanny at $130/week (4-5 days depending on DH's day off), which works out to be about $3.25/hour.
