Crackers

Ok, so reading around, I've realized why my daughter seems so hungry all the time..I don't think I am giving her enough even though I feed her 3 meals a day and snacks. Maybe this is why she isn't sleeping through the night.

My question is--Crackers. What kind of crackers if any for snacks do you give? I had gotten some whole wheat Ritz crackers for a meal, and reading the ingredients to see if I could give it to her, of course there is high fructose corn syrup in it. I know this isnt a huge deal, but I'm hesitant to introduce her to that early on.

So what do yall give for your snacks? (of course along with fruit/veggies)

Re: Crackers

  • I do cheerios as a snack, over crakcers.

  • We do all different kinds of crackers, Ritz, the Townhouse Pretzel/Crackers, and I've even started recently small pretzel sticks.  She loves them all.

  • sorry, forgot my question along with the crackers is: does anyone know how much sugar per serving they should have? Her 1 year appt isn't until near end of month. Thanks!

Also Cheerios, puffs, and yogurt melts

  • Mine loves whole wheat saltines... she's not fond of bread so I make her cracker sun nut butter & jelly sandwiches.  She also really likes waffles as long as I toast them long enough to get crispy.  And she also loves chex... basically anything she can crunch between her chompers.

I thumbs down Ritz because they use lard. Barf. But I don't think the HFCS in them by itself contains any more sugar than fruit preserves on a sandwich, or even fruit on its own.  Most of the nutrition books I've read say to avoid 'excess' sugar, so I buy crackers without.  If you're set on Ritz, try looking for a low salt or low fat version... they tinker with the recipes, so they may omit the HFCS.  I buy Premium brand saltines, and the Whole Wheat doesn't have HFCS but the regular ones do.

  • Thank you all. I had been looking at the Earth's Best snacks. I do already give her puffs and she eats yogurt, haven't gotten yogurt melts yet for that reason, but maybe I will since yogurt is expensive and she can alternate.

I will look at the saltine crackers too..those are good because they melt a little in your mouth kind of like the puffs which I like.

  • JT has been loving the Toasteds whole wheat ones. I never checked the label though so I don't know the sugar (yikes - or salt) content. I tried Cheerios a bit back and he choked on one so I've been scared to introduce them.

I just realized from lurking on 12-24 that I need to give more snacks. I'm consistent with 3 meals per day but I have to figure out how to get snacks in there. Puffs and Yogurt Melts I do give, as well as those cheese doodle looking Gerber snacks, but I think he needs more substance and consistency. So to that extent, I also think that's contributing to him not STTN also.

I cut up a bunch of fruit the other day so I'm trying to incorporate that a bit more. And cheese is always is a great and easy snack. I buy the shredded packages (mozzarella or cheddar) or give American cheese slices broken into pieces.
