  From what my hospital told me the baby is automatically put on Tricare Prime for 90 days.  You have those 90 days to get down to the Tri Care office and let them know if you want to keep the baby on prime or switch to standard.

  Maybe it differs by region then because the tri care office here told me 90 days.

  Ahhh Thanks Ladies.... Most insurances have the 90 days, just making sure that tricare does something similar.

  With LO, I had to go to enroll him in Tricare very shortly after he was born.  When my pedi office called Tricare to confirm that he was covered when I took LO to his newborn appointment, he wasn't in the system yet, so he wasn't covered by Tricare yet.  Luckily, the pedi office had dealt with Tricare before, and had me call them when I had taken LO to the ID office and had him enrolled in DEERS.  After I enrolled him in DEERS, all was good.

   So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

  If any family member is enrolled in Prime, TRICARE Prime covers the following:Newborns for 60 days beginning from the date of birth;Adopted children for 60 days beginning from the effective date of the actual adoption; andPre-adoptive children for 60 days beginning on the date of placement of the court or approved adoption agencyTo continue Prime coverage past the first 60 days, you must enroll your newborn or adoptee in either TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote within the 60-day window. On the 61st day and after, if your child isn't enrolled, TRICARE processes all future claims under TRICARE Standard and Extra (higher costs) until your child is enrolled.

  Not sure if this is for all branches, but my DH is AD USMC. We just had our LO in August.

  Before birth, I suggest looking on the tricare website and finding a pediatrician. That's what we did, and interviewed and picked one, and that pediatrician was called when the baby was born to check on her every day in the hospital.

  She was automatically covered for 60 days under MY tricare.

  Within those 60 days, you have to apply for/get the birth certificate and social security number for the baby. Then once you have both, take it down to 2 different places - (1) enroll her on base in deers (the same place you would have went to be enrolled/get your ID; and THEN after she is in the deers system (up to 2 days), you have to go down to your local tricare office (ours was on base, but you can always call and ask them where the closest one is), and enroll her in tricare. Within a week or two, we got a coverage verification ID Card (but we still use my ID for her until she is older at the dr. office).

  Do you have a power of attorney, or will your husband be back within 60 days?  One or the other will have to happen so that you can enroll your baby in Tricare.  I had a POA, and within the first month went on base to the personnel office to add the baby.  I think that I only needed the mother's birth certificate that I was given in the hospital.  Once the baby got a SSN, I was able to call to add that information.

  Also, I had to go to the Tricare and DEERS office after personnel.  I forget which order, but if you make it to either, they can point you in the right direction.  If your husband is back he could just take care of all of this, and you and the baby would not need to go anywhere.

  No I dont have a POA, the last time he was here it was a holiday and it was ridiculous trying to get one done, and we eventually forget. I think he can go to his deers office, fill it out and mail it to me like he did for me... I guess well find out! Thanks for the adivice ladies.

  babies do get 60 days of coverage with Tricare Prime..once baby is born, you do have to call Tricare and DEERS to get the child registered. Once in, the baby will be assigned to a PCM and can be seen.
