Temper tantrums

My kid has got them down pat.  Last night it was 40 minutes of laying on his back screaming because we would not let him watch 'Melmo' and eat his dinner.  No amount of conforting or offering other alternatives was going to work.  We finally ignored him until he calmed down.  Then he ate a half a cup of broccili and a handful of cashews.

Re: Temper tantrums

  • My son is driving me crazy--too much drama.  I ordered Happiest Toddler on the Block, and we are going to watch it together.  He loves Elmo/Sesame Street.  And his favorite book is called Bunny Hop--which this book drives me crazy.  I like the Sandra Boynton books better.

  • Booooo... Bad Little M. No wait, Big M still has them.

    Today's episode went like:

Boy wakes up after 5 minute nap needing a new butt. I change him see if he wants to go back to sleep then carry on eating leftover pumpkin cake.

    He looks at me.

     "Would you like some?"

    "No."

Another bite and "are you sure you don't want some?"

    "NO!"

Last bite; "Are you really, really sure?"

"Noooooooo!!!" On the brink of tears.

I finish the piece of cake and he commences a half hour long tantrum, hyperventilating and crying, "I. Need. Some. CaAaAake."

Try a shrieker.  DD has it down to the point where it makes your skin crawl.  This from the girl who doesn't talk in words.  Tonight both DS and DD were shrieking at each other as a game in the tub, and I told them the next one to scream gets out of ther tub first.  All was silent. Oy vey!

  • I feel your pain! Charlie has them all the time! Right now he thinks everything is his and if I say no, then the dramatics begin. This really is a challenging time.

  • DD thinks everything is "mine" and has a fit when told otherwise, especially with keys. Last night, I gave her some cheese to nibble on and it was from Grandma's house while we were there. When we got home it was "more cheese" and when I said we didn't have any that she had Grandma's cheese, a fit came on. I got down to her level and told her to look me in the eyes and I said calmly that we don't have cheese but I think we might have strawberries or bananas, maybe an apple and through the sniffling I got "ok." I did find strawberries and she quickly gobbled them down and then wanted more and preceded to have another fit because she ate them all. It's like if she doesn't get what she asks for, we immediately get a tantrum. We also noticed that if she doesn't get to watch anything she likes which can be super why, caillou, ni hao kai-lan or woody (meaning any toy story movie) means we will be loud to the point of shrieking or constantly ask for one of those literally one at a time. It's like she is telling you if I can't watch what I want, I'm not going to allow you to enjoy what you want to watch.

Lately, she tries to fight going to bed and we've gotten to the point where we use the on-demand section and look for Sprouts' Good Night Show sleep-a-thon and show her that her favorites characters are sleeping. She'll say goodnight to them as she sees them and afterwards head to bed. It's still a bit of a struggle but not as bad as before watching the sleep-a-thon.

Hmm, I do this at least once a week. Stress eater :)

And holy heck, after reading these posts I fear the tantrum. I think I?ll be able to handle the in-house tantrums ok, it?s the wailing & limb-flinging in the middle of Target tantrum I?m dreading most. I?m easily embarrassed & I imagine my LO totally playing on that, lol.

  • Oh boy...and here I thought I was the only one who had a little dram-o-meter!

  • No advice, but just want to say that I am so not waiting forward all that fun...

  • Ignoring works best for us. DH will keep talking to LO and it just gets worse so I've told DH to just shut up and let LO be. Eventually he calms down but his tantrums are getting worse lately. He gets upset as soon as he can't get his way with something, it's really annoying but normal I guess. Time out doesn't work b/c he can get out of his room, crib or PNP so there's no place for him to stay put.
