I can really use some advice. I'm out of shape and overweight. So I decided to try a bootcamp program. Today was the first day, got there at 5:30am, and from the moment I stepped in I felt so uncomfortable. Everyone there had been there before and was fit and thin. I did the best I could, but hated every moment of being there. I hated that when doing circuits I was slowing people down. I felt like "that" person that everyone else wishes weren't there. No one said a word to me the entire time. The instructor came over to me once after I was exhausted to show me how to do a step up, but I was just too tired to do it. In the end I feel like a got a workout in, but it was so uncomfortable.
I'm rambling, but I'm really upset over it. I wanted this class to be a boost. It was advertised as being for people of all fitness levels and you could go at your own pace so I thought it would be totally different. Should I drag myself back there tomorrow or try to find another class? I only paid for 3 days so if I don't go back its not that big of deal. Should I just go it alone until I can hack it in a class like this?
Re: bootcamp disaster
The first day of a new program is always the hardest. You don't know what to expect out of the routine, instructor or our of yourself. I'd try my best to get in a great workout, give enough room for the more advanced members (when running or doing circuits) and reevaluated things after the 2nd day.
Personally, I'd go back and give it another shot now that you know what to expect. Plus it shows the other people & instructor that you are motivated & determined to get back into a healthy lifestyle. Oh, and you paid for 3 days
so I would go to get my money's worth. But if you still don't like it after the 2nd day then start looking for a new program.
I'm surprise that the instructor didn't give you any encouragement, that's a major fail on their end. They (well, I am speaking as a Group Class Instructor) want to see you succeed and return, but a good instructor will be motivating and encouraging to everyone. IMO there's nothing wrong with pulling anew person or struggling person aside for a moment to tell them that they are doing great.
**Don't compare yourself to the other people in the class. Yes, they may be fit now, but they could have started where you are now. For example, I weighed 240 lbs when I started working out last May and I am now 155, If you saw me in class you may assume I am naturally fit, but no, I started as a fat ass and I earned my size 10 jeans and M sized shirts. Here's my before & just before I got pregnant pictures
Thank you for your thought, encouragement and sharing your pictures. I will go back tomorrow and try my best to get in a good workout.
Do you mind me asking how you lost the weight? I'm in a similar position and would love to have similar results.
May 1st I started with 2 meal replacement shakes a day + a sensible dinner with reasonable portions and started Couch to 5k and Zumba at home. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months but the meal replacement shakes started hurting my budget so I went down to 1 once a day and bought protein shakes from the store.
I started Turbo Fire (cardio kickboxing) in July on top of jogging every other day and finished that in October, lost a total of 50 lbs.
Joined a gym in August for the group classes and by the time I found out I was pregnant I lost 80 lbs. I am currently following the ideas behind the Flat Belly Diet, incorporating 1-2 protein shakes a day into my diet (the shake mix, milk and frozen berries) and I go to the gym 6 days a week (twice a day before I found out I was preggo, now it's once a day). I also become a Turbo Kick instructor (the gym version of Turbo Fire) and I am currently studying to become a Group Class Instructor/Personal Trainer.
I track all of my foods & exercise on MyFitnessPal.com which is very helpful to me.
Totally keep going!
Maybe talk to the instructor and ask her/him to make sure you are doing stuff right, make them accountable for their class.
Also, the people already there are probably not used to being super friendly to people until they make the commitment to keep coming, you know? So show them that you have the will and power to keep going and doing it!
Good luck!
that's amazing!!!
Hi - I just want to share that not all bootcamp classes are that way. After several months of putting it off, I finally went to a bootcamp in my area (Orange County, CA). There are a lot of fit people but some not as fit people too - like me. However, every has been tremendously welcoming, the instructor has been awesome, and the way the class is organized, I am never holding anyone up if I am going slower, am uncoordinated, etc. So, I guess my point is that not all classes are created alike and it might be worth seeing what else is available.
I have been going a couple of months and I have lost about 10 lbs and am sooo much stronger.
Hey there!
I'm so sorry you felt like this!! I teach boot camp classes, and I've had clients who've felt just like you do. It gets better, trust me. Like a pp said, the first day of a program is always the hardest.
I can guarantee you that people weren't upset at you....90% of the people who take boot camp classes start (and felt) the way you do now.
