Tell me your feelings on walkers

Just curious what you ladies think about walkers.  I've heard some negative things about them but it all seems related to unsupervised use or prolonged use.

We have one and I'm not at all concerned with using it, because my LO is fully supervised and she's not in it for long periods of time.  But, I definitely got the side eye from a friend visiting the other day!

Re: Tell me your feelings on walkers

  • I won't be using one and my dr. said that if we have one at home to get rid of it.  I just don't think the risk is worth it.  They can move pretty quickly and it only takes a second for something to happen.  That is just my .02.

  • Okay, maybe I need to do more research but what is the deal with walkers?  We have one, as well as a jumperoo and LO loves both!

Do you know anyone that could lend you one?  Our friends lent us theirs.  But to be honest I never use it...not cause I'm against them (and I have no open staircases or anything either) I just never really think to use it...it's sitting in the basement.

Where are you from anyway?  I'm a rare anglo-Quebecker lol

  • I have one yet to use it. It is in LO's room. She has sat in it while I get something but not for long

  • I completely understand the associated dangers but I think it's a little extreme to ban them!  What is the reasoning behind this?

  • I had one for G.  I plan to get one for J.  Actually, MH fell in love with one at BRU tonight but it was $130.  He may still get it, but I am hoping that he finds one cheaper.  Our stairs are blocked off and it's not like I am going to stick him in it then go take a bath or a nap.

Wow, an Anglo-Quebecer! That is rare, but not unheard of :)

Unfortunetely, I don't know anyone that would still have one. And I haven't seen any on Kijiji either.

Im in central Ontario, an hour north of Toronto.

This is very true and they can move quickly.  I will say - my LO can actually crawl faster than she goes in the walker.  But I'm not going to stop her from crawling, especially if she is well supervised. I think that as long as potential dangers are addressed (no open stairs, no things that the baby can pull down) then to me, it poses just as much danger as a baby who is mobile on his/her own.

  • we don't have stairs and we don't leave our door's open. I do not see any problem with them as long as you supervise the baby. With that said, yes we do have one. DD Does not intentionally move in it yet. She just sort of accidentally moves backwards but she likes it and hopefully soon it will be able to drive it on her own.

I don't get with the BIG danger is if the child is supervised and precautions are followed with doors/stairs. I mean these babies are going to be walking before we know it.... what's the difference?
  • Oh okay, I understand now about the walker.  We do not have stairs and we do not leave our door open.  LO does go everywhere in it, and I mean everywhere!

  • Judah has one that he uses in our kitchen and living room.  We have a gate at the doorway so he can't get any further than that.  He is in it for 15 minutes at a time maybe twice per day (usually when DH and I are working on breakfast or dinner).  He loves to chase the cat around in it and to "run" after us as well.  I don't see any reason for concern if they are properly supervised while using it.

All I was saying, is that it's not for us.  She isn't a huge fan of her jumperoo, so I don't think she'd like a walker.  We also have mostly carpeting so it wouldn't work in our house.  Again, this is just my opinion.

  • I'm not against them, but I've never thought to buy one. DD loves her saucer and jumperoo. If someone had gifted us one I wouldn't be against using it.
  • I have one in the basement, I haven't broken it out yet. I plan on doing so soon though. I'm not worried bc DD will only use it on the main level, and there are no open stairs for her to take a tumble down.

  • DS much prefers the walker to the exersaucer.  That said, he can't make it move on our carpet - yet.  Frankly, I cannot make it roll on our carpet either.  We do not have any stairs, nor do we leave any doors open (don't want the cat to get out).  I'm not too worried about him hurting himself and it's pretty much the only way I can get anything done around the house.  He's in it for maybe a collective 30 minutes all day in 5-minute stints.  The walker was loaned to us.

Walmart sells a gender neutral baby trend one for around $24.

yeah. We have hardwood in the living area and tile in the kitchen. The walker definitely does not move on our carpet in the bedrooms.

  • We have one and DS likes it quite a bit.  He can go all across the room backwards, but hasn't quite figured out how to go forward.
  • I've read that they are dangerous for babies development. That baby used the wrong muscles with a walker and it can delay milestones such as walking as well as the risks of falling and stairs.  Not sure if it's correct but I'm not using one.  Just the exersaucer
