It is informative....more realistic then Baby Story. Baby story sugarcoats things and they never show situations that could happen. I watched One Born Everymin for the first time a few weeks ago and the women was shaving her face and was cracking jokes the whole time and she ended up giving birth to a 10pound boy an his shoulders got stuck and she said after "jesus ch*st i didnt know I was giving birth to godzilla" haha
Very real, but very scary. Shows intubation of babies, etc. But I still watch it anyways, to inform myself incase awful things may happen....knock on wood.
It's probably going to make you glad you aren't related to any of the people on the show. Fistfighting grandmas, grandparents who harass the father about his job while their daughter is having contractions, sisters who egg on fathers to do stupid things...suddenly I understand why animals in the wild like to go off and be alone to birth.

IMO it really feeds into the culture of fear around childbirth we have in this country. Yes, scary things can sometimes happen, but the show really focuses on them and plays them up, and conveys the attitude that birth is a dire emergency waiting to happen and there is nothing you can do about it. Not a helpful attitude for learning, imo. I'm all for knowing about possibilities, I just feel the attitude of the show is not an overall helpful one for preparing for birth.
I enjoy it, I agree that it does tend to focus on the high-risk pregnancies, but it is certainly interesting to watch. I like it better than A Baby Story.
I've been a labor and delivery nurse for 6 years in an inner-city hospital (pregnant w/ my 1st, due 5/12) and I think it's the only baby show on tv worth watching! Stuff like that happens every day where I work. It also gives my husband a little insight into why I come home feeling like crap sometimes, pregnant or not!!
The one I watched was good in that one was a natural birth where the people labored at home for awhile and the birth went smoothly, the next was a teen mom who sidmt want drugs and ended up having them in the end and the baby had meconium so it was an emergency and the other woman had n epidural and ended up having some minor side effects, so very different but good to see.

I have watched the show one time and will never watch it again. One thing that bugs me about the show is that they do not show positive birth experiences. The majority of the crap that they show on there is pretty negative and would discourage me as a FTM. However I have already had my first birth experience, it was horriable and this time I am setting my self up for a positive experience there for I do not watch negative type shows like this.

I agree with every word of this. When I watch the show I feel scared and I don't really feel like it accurately portrays a typical birth AT ALL. The do a lot of editing and camera work to make every moment as interesting and drama filled as possible. I actually refuse to watch the show now that I'm pregnant. We should be watching and reading things that make us feel confident. Watch The Business of Being Born and read Spiritual Midwifery! haha
I think it depends on your personality. If you're someone that is already worried about birth and could easily get freaked out - you'd probably want to stay away. For me, I like it because I feel like I see a lot that I wasn't aware of before, and find it interesting and informative. But, I see how others could get really freaked out by it.
I love the show! While it can be scary at times, it's very real and I would rather see those things than stay sheltered and have something happen that I've never heard of!
I will actually be delivering at Riverside, the hopsital on the show!
I think woman should watch it. I just started watching it, and as a nurse, I think it's very informative of what the worst case scenerio can be. I don't know about anyone else, but I like to be prepared for that case....because you just never know.
Today I watched the newest one that the water had meconium in it and the baby ended up being intubated right in front of the parents. The nurses and NP kept saying she's not doing good....come on baby just breathe. I was in tears watching it. But I also know that it can happen, and I applaud the mother for how calm she was during the process. I would have been out of the bed trying to help save my baby.

This, exactly. I was all for watching the show until my own L&D. Now that I realize what a natural experience it is, the show leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. For me, there's too much focus on the idea that something horrible could happen at any second and you should spend your whole L&D preparing for the worst. Too much dramatics for my taste!

I agree with this. It also shows almost exclusively women on pitocin/epidurals just lying in bed waiting for the baby to come while the nurses joke around and talk about 'not progressing fast enough so we'll do a c-section'. Well how is a woman supposed to progress when she's just lying in bed?
I feel this plays into the whole 'birth as a business' thing.
I'd love to see a show about Ina May's birth centre so people could see that MOST birth/labours can be done naturally and without drama.
