Graco Carseats- Thoughts

We have to return our Britax B-Safe because it is incompatible with the Baby Jogger stroller attachment and I'm torn between two Graco's. Neither of which I love but such is.

Both are the same price (the 35 is on sale this week)

So I have the...

Graco Metropolitan- 22, it's lighter and would be a great fit in the car at 26 inches long. I haven't seen it in person.

Graco 35- bigger, longer, good fabric but about 3 pounds heavier than the 22. It is on a good sale this week though. It would absolutely max out the space in the back seat.

Does anyone have experience with either of these, or Graco carseats in general? I can't go try them in my car unfortunately, like I did when I went shopping last week. I did see the bottom one in store. The latch system is different than the one I've used with my nephews and the ones I tried in store but I'm sure it still passes all the same safety laws.

Re: Graco Carseats- Thoughts

  • Whichever one you get, I'd make sure it has that front strap adjuster like you can see in the picture of the 32. We just dug out DD's old Snugride 22 and it does NOT. You have to tighten and adjust the straps only from the back of the seat. Major PITA. I don't really remember having an issue with it when DD used it, but I can see now that I'm not going to like it after only using seats with front adjusters for her since.

  • we have the 35, and while I really liked it and will use it again, DS outgrew it in height and still is 11-12lbs UNDER the weight limit, lol!

So having the higher weight limit was a waste for us.

  • We have a snugride35 that we used for DS.  It has not expired, so we are going to use it with #2.   I had/have no problems with it.  I really like it.  We bought the stroller that went with it, so the car seat snaps into it.  We've been able to use the stroller without the seat for quite some time.

I think that's how it is for most people. My DD doesn't even weigh 30lbs yet and she's almost 3!

exactly, people who buy it for the weight...its really a waste of money. My DS who is 2 is 25lbs! Its the height that matters. I would go with what ever one is cheaper.

  • We have a Graco 22 seat.  While not having the front adjuster strap might be a small inconvenience, it hasn't really bothered us.  What I will say is that if you use it as a carrier a lot, those things get really heavy really fast.  I am glad we have the lighter one or I would not be able to lift it myself with baby in it.  It is also nice having the extra room in the car.  DS1 outgrew the 22 in height at 6 months, and he was only 19 lbs.  While the 35 might allow you to go a tiny bit longer before buying a bigger seat, I don't think it would be enough to make much difference depending on the price.

  • I would go with whatever one is lighter w/out baby in it.  We have a Graco that only goes to 22 (not sure if it is the snug ride, it is 3 yrs old) and we took DS out at 6 mos b/c it got to heavy to carry.  He hadn't maxed out the weight or height yet, it was just getting to heavy to carry.

  • We got over lugging DD around in the carseat before 6 months old, so the weight didn't make a big difference to us.  At that point, we preferred carrying just her, putting her in a front carrier, or a stroller.  It doesn't make much sense to be lugging a baby who can sit up, and maybe even crawl in a carseat.

We have the Metrolite travel system, which looks very similar to the 2nd picture, but not quite.  Graco is bad about changing the base and seats every year so nothing is ever interchangeable.  We liked it, but DD grew out of it around a year.  It was 4 years ago so drs hadn't really started pushing rear-facing until 2 years old, so we might have to do something a little different from 1 yr - 2 yrs this time around.  Something to consider.

  • I had the Graco vs. Chicco debate when looking at strollers/car seats. I ended up going in store and finding that the Chicco car seats/strollers worked better for me. They were easier for me.

Also I had recos from a few moms who loved their Chicco strollers/car seats, so that pushed it further for me.
