Pregnant after 35

When to Go

Hello!

This is my first time on The Bump. I had a positive pregnancy test yesterday and am about 4 1/2 weeks by my calculation. I am 39 and this is my first pregnancy. When I called the medical group I use today, the lady told me who the ob's are and that they didn't need to see me for more than two weeks (appt is 1/23). My husband said to try another doctor's office to see if I should be seen earlier. Then I logged on here tonight and I can see that ladies that same amount preggo as I am have already been to the doctor, etc. Should I wait? Try to get a new doctor? I'm lost in all of this and I definitely want to do the right thing for my poppy seed.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice!

Re: When to Go

  • Normally see nurse for blood work etc at around 8 weeks and meet with dr couple weeks later.

I don't think most drs see you earlier unless there is an issue/specific reason.

  • Normally, OBs wont see you until you are at least 6 weeks because anything before that does not show on the ultrasound if they want to confirm your pregnancy to make sure it isnt ectopic etc. I tested positive for pregnancy at 3weeks and the doc scheduled me at exactly 6 weeks to confirm the pregnancy and to date me.

  • Each practice is different. For normal pregnancies my group has you see just the NP at six weeks and then OB is either 8 or 10--I can't remember.

  • First, congrats! I went in at 5w3d because I have long cycles and didn't know how far along I was. So, they wanted to date it. Once they had a guesstimate, I was told to come back at 8w for my first OB, and then every 4w after that until week 24. The wait will make you crazy, especially at the beginning. Good luck!
  • First congrats to you and welcome!! Second, not unusual to be seen at that time.  I know I thought it was a little crazy too, but normal.  You can try another OB if you would like, but doubt you will be seen before that.  Best of luck to you during your pregnancy and again, congrats!!

  • Most OBs will not see you for the first appt until 6-8 weeks along.  That is standard practice.  Those of us who have been seen earlier are typically working with a fertility specialist and/or have special medical needs that make us high risk.  If you don't fall into that category, you'll have a hard time fining a doc who will see you any sooner.  Sorry, I know the first few weeks can be the most nerve-wracking.  Hang in there!

Most women don't get to see a doctor until they're at least 8 weeks, unless there is some other medical issue that needs to be considered.  I was in at 5 weeks, because I'm diabetic, and needed to get on insulin instead of oral meds.  Waiting sucks, but you really have no other option.  On the plus side though, at 6 weeks they may offer you an u/s and you might be able to already see your LO.

This. Unless you have issues they don't see you until later. I wasn't seen until 8 weeks and won't have an u/s until the 12th.
  • The earliest my doc office would see me was 6 weeks - he is a fertility specialist, with many AMA patients.  I saw the nurse practitioner the first time, for an ultrasound, then my regular doc at 9 weeks, and will see him again at 14 weeks 3 days on Wed.  As many of the ladies have said, all you can do before 6 is confirm the pregnancy - at 6+ you have a chance to hear the heartbeat!

  • Thanks for all the help, ladies. I realize now that it's normal that we have our appointment at seven weeks. And they're going to do an ultrasound, which I am looking forward to.

    Thanks!
