Is anyone bothering with a crib bedding set?

I'm thinking we'll probably go without for this baby. We were given a 6 piece Lambs & Ivy set for DD, but a lot of it went to waste. The comforter was used on the floor as a playmat rather than in the crib, and the bumper pad was never used. I'm thinking all we really need are 3 - 4 fitted crib sheets (will reuse DD's if it's a girl, buy new ones if its a boy). We never used any type of bumper in the crib and DD had a sleeping bag in lieu of blankets. The idea of a bedding set appeals to me though. They're so cute and colorful. I just don't want to waste $150-$200 when it really isn't completely necessary. What's everyone else doing, particularly second time moms?

Re: Is anyone bothering with a crib bedding set?

  • I've been struggling with this as well!  I don't know what to do.  I'm not all big into the themes, but some of the patterns are giving me great ideas for the room. I wish I could order just the dust ruffle from some of the sets!

  • I had a set that I got for DS that I feel out of love with really quickly. We've been rotating plain crib sheets and different blankets. I decided that since the kids are going to be sharing a room, I'm going to make a new set of things that will be interchangeable between the two of them.

I plan on making 4 cribs sheets, 2 thinner blankets, 2 thicker blankets (for use both in and out of the crib), 2 taggies, a few changing pad covers, new curtains (or at least accenting some already made curtains), a glider cover and 2 pillows.

  •  I am thinking we will pass too. I will get some new sheets, and probably one of those mesh/breathable bumpers.  DS slept in sleep sacks, so I will reuse or get more of those. Baby will be in our room and then sharing a room, so there won't be any decorating a nursery.  And yes, most of DS's set wasn't used either!

  • I will be.  The bumper will probably only be in there until before baby actually sleeps in the crib.  The rest gets used once baby's out of the sleep sacks until they outgrow their toddler bed (with DD1, she was in it until she was 4).

I usually shop Ebay to see what they have as I refuse to pay $200-$300 for a set from Toys R' Us.  Right now the set I love is at Overstock and for a good price.

  • I'm not at all. We bought one with DS, but, like you said, it mostly went unused. For DD we only bought a couple crib sheets. If this LO is another girl, we'll reuse those sheets. If it's a boy, we'll buy some new ones, but that's it. (We received tons of baby blankets for both DS and DD, so we're set for those)

  • With DS I made a crib skirt and we just got some crib sheets. DS still sleeps in a blanket sleeper or footy pjs instead of using a blanket.  I plan on going without the crib set again.

  • I'm not bother with a "set" I've just bought some really cute cheap sheets and a matching dust ruffle but I'm prob gonna take a pass on the bumper and comforter.

  • I'm a FTM and I will be just buying the basic fitted sheets. It seems like everything else is really expensive and unnecessary.
  • Nope.  I'm not into the whole matchy-matchy thing so I just gonna get a few crib sheet sets and I already have some cute blankets coming my way for when the LO is old enough to use one.  I don't need a bumper and my friend can make me a crib skirt.

  • I'm only buying a crib skirt and a breathable bumper. MIL is making the crib sheets out of that minky fabric that's so soft. No extra blankets will go inside the crib.

  • Nope. IMO  it's unneccesary.

All you need is , crib sheets and a blanket or two. We did a crib skirt too.

  • We didn't get a set with DD, and won't with this LO, either.  I just got crib sheets and made a crib skirt.

  • We won't be getting one. I really love all the cute designs and how easy it is to pull the decor together around one of these sets; however, I know we won't be using the bumper or comforter so it really would be a big waste of money for us.

This is exactly what I want - I just want the crib skirt or the crib skirt and sheets.

  • I don't think we're going to.  My mom made a baby quilt for my niece, and she said she'll do the same for us once we know if baby is a boy or girl and decide on nursery colors, so I'll get that for when they're old enough to use a blanket, and just get several fitted crib sheets to match to use in the meantime.  I think I'm going to see if she can also make a crib rail protection thing in the same material as she does the quilt - if not, MIL probably can, so I'll ask her.

  • I am a FTM but have decided to purchase a set. I am going to use the bumper in a couple different ways. The bumper has safari animals on it so I am going to cute them out and use them as wall decorations. Then the remaining sections I will use to make aroma therapy/rice bags.   I couldn't find the set in individual sheets, blanket, etc.

  • I'm not.  I'm buying everything separately.  Most sets come with stuff I won't use, like a bumper.  I'm getting breathable mesh bumpers.  I want a plain pink sheet, which I found very difficult to locate at all, much less in a set.  I put a few different sheets on my registry, some plain pink and some with a pattern.  And I still haven't found the plain pink crib skirt that I want.  But definitely not getting a set!

  • Nope, crib sheets are super easy to make if you have a sewing machine at home...just go online, grab a free pattern, and check out the plethora of fabrics out there! (and if you don't sew, you probably know someone who does!)
  • My plan is to buy 3 crib sheets and a crib skirt for the crib- that's it.  My quilt and bumper with DD were a total waste, as well.  I think we're going to order from PBK or go to the outlet to buy our bedding since you can buy the pieces you want without being stuck with a whole set.  Plus, a lot of etsy sellers have stuff to match the PBK bedding, so we can still get some cute accessories to decorate with.

  • I got a set from PBK that included a sheet, crib skirt, toddler quilt & bumper for my daughter and I plan to do the same with this baby. We coslept so I used the bumpers in my daughter's crib as an accessory since she wasn't using it to sleep in. I haven't done anything with the quilt yet, but once we convert her crib to a toddler bed it will be used, so I feel like the set is worth it.
