Success after IF

IUI ?

For our first pregnancy, we went straight to IVF due to a variety of reasons.  Now, given that we have 2, we don't want to do IVF again knowing this is our last pregnancy and we don't want to chance having extra embryos.

DH was just tested again.  His motility is at 40% but his morphology is at 1.  My OB said he has done IUIs with a level 1 before and that after a sperm wash, the level might actually be closer to 2 or 3 (I think it is out of 6...the paperwork is in the kitchen!).

So, any success stories out there with morphology issues?  I'm not too concerned with motility on the IUI since they won't have to swim very far!

Thanks!!

Re: IUI ?

  • no experience with male factor... but just curious if you were planning to take clomid or other meds - or just do the IUI with your regular cycle?

We got DS1 with one follie on our first cycle (clomid/IUI)... and got the twins on our 2nd cycle of the same, with 2 follies.

Just beware that any follies you have could = babies, as you know, in case you are against having multiples again :)

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • my husband has "1%" morph, and has gotten me pregnant SEVERAL times via TI, IUI and IVF/ICSI. I believe his post-wash (IUI prep) was typically about 20-40million, Grade A, good motility and average volume.

If morph is your main issue, I'd say it's MORE than worth a try. I just had a lot of my own issues that made the majority of our pregnancies fail a week after they started.

  • I got pregnant on our 3rd IUI. My husband has 1-2% morph (not sure if that is the same scale your doctor is using).

  • Our only issue 1-2% morph on Krueger scale.  I have a son and a daughter through IUI's.  For my son 2nd cycle. Daughter 1st cycle.  When I was going through it I found differing opinions.  I was told by one RE go straight to IVF.  Another RE was going to do our next cycle unmedicated just IUI since all my levels were normal and I was relatively young (33) but it turns out I was pregnant through Clomid and IUI's at my OB so didn't need to go to RE.  If it makes you feel better I actually had two follicles the month of my daughter and it was still a singleton pregnancy.  Good Luck. Definitely worth a try.
  • We had 2-3% morph, and got pg with DS on IUI#2 with clomid.  DD was a bit of a surprise when DS was 7 months old.  I got pg again after TTC for 6 months back in Oct, although that was a m/c.  I would definitely give IUI a try!

  • We got pregnant on our 1st IUI with 0% morph after wash. We're thinking that I may have gotten pregnant on the TI in the days before the IUI. And we did have both my follies fertilize and implant, but only one developed. If we go for number 3, and it's necessary we'll definitely do IUI again.

  • Thanks for the hope ladies!!  I realize there is a chance of multiples again, but we will take it one step at a time and if it happens, it happens.  I have experience in that area!

My OB said he would do the IUI with Clomid.  I was on it before, but just with TI.  I responded well so hopefully, 4 years later, I will still respond positively.
