How old is too old to swaddle?

I recently found out that my friend still swaddled her 14 month old. I just always thought that I would need to stop swaddling when can roll over... So I was shocked at 14 months. Sometimes the swaddle is too little do her DH uses a sheet....even scarier to me!

  • We stopped swaddling when DS was close to rolling over. I would have been a nervous wreck having him swaddled any later. To each their own...I guess.

  • We swaddled until DD was 6 months old because she started rolling over..and that's when her sleep went to crap and we started bed sharing.
  • my DD is almost 8 months old and we're still swaddling.  and she's still not rolling over.

I think Fly might still be swaddling too and our LOs share a birthday.

Although, I don't know if you'd really call ours a swaddle anymore - it's a sleep sack on the outside and inside it's a receiving blanket folded in 4ths that keeps her arms down at her side (like the arm portion of the MB).

a 14 month old would definitely let you know if she got into a position that she couldn't get out of.   her neck is certainly strong enough to not have her face plant in the crib and suffocate.  i wouldn't worry about it.

  • I think DD was 15 months when we finally stopped swaddling for good.  We originally stopped when she was a few months old (don't remember exactly when) because I was worried about her rolling, and then her sleep became terrible.  When it didn't improve over a couple of months I tried swaddling again and it worked.  She was plenty strong enough to roll herself back and forth, or even bust out of the swaddle if she really wanted to.  I mentioned it to the pedi around her 1 year birthday and he said that if it was working for us there's no medical reason to stop.

  • We stopped when DD could roll over WHILE swaddled.  I went in one morning and found her face down still completely swaddled tight,  after that I wasn't comfortable leaving her while swaddled.  This was a while after she started rolling though,  she was actually already crawling by this time(6 month-ish)

  • We stopped when the swaddle started being counterproductive--the fighting to get free was actually waking them up more. I think with both of mine that was right around 4-5 months.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Elena was swaddled too up until a year.  She never would roll over in it and would immediately go to sleep when swaddled well.  We started leaving one arm out for safety at some point but that never really seemed necessary.  she just really loved being snug as a bug in a rug.

We stopped a lot earlier with Julia just b/c it didnt have the magical properties it did for Elena.

  • thanks ladies...I won't worry about her little one as much. I just couldn't and still can't picture a 1 year old swaddled but I might end up there myself.
