Would this bother you?

I was at Target pharmacy picking up my dogs Prozac and my Zoloft (we are a special family) and I was at the drop off counter and he invited another woman to use the counter to fill out a form so she is right next to me and there were many other people at the pick up side. He walks to the back where their computers are and yelled to me "what is the prescription for" am I just weird for not wanting all of Target knowing I am on crazy meds? What if it was herpes meds or something like that? It just irked me that he wanted me to yell that I was picking up Zoloft across the pharmacy. Isn't that a violation of HIPA?

  • I think I'd be pissed to...I don't know that what he did would be a HIPAA violation since he asked you what it was not asked you if it was something specific...How did you respond?

  • Yes, that would really bother me. That would be like going to the bank and having to yell your account number across the lobby to the bank teller. Medications are such a personal thing IMO!

  • Yeah that's not cool. I would be so uncomfortable. What did you say?

  • Yes, that would bother me, and it's inappropriate/unprofessional. At my pharmacy, they have a line that's a good 10 feet behind the drop off/pick up counters so that people standing in line can't hear. I just picked up a vaginal cream for an infection, and would have been pissed if I had to yell it across the pharmacy.

This isn't meant rude, does your dog really take prozac or was that a joke?  If so, is it for depression?  I've never heard of that! I think my dog needs it since Jr was born hes a jealous, depressed lump lol

My cat used to take Prozac.  She had a severe food anxiety- every day starting 2 hours before mealtime she'd sit next to her dish and start howling.  She was terrified we'd somehow forget to feed her.  Also, she has seperation anxiety.  It helped her out a lot and we were able to wean her off about a year later.

I think she may need to go back on because she's having jealousy issues about the baby.

My dog is on Prozac because she has anxiety and it was causing her to attack the other dog. Prozac has helped a ton.

  • That is ridiculous. I would not have yelled it, I would have said, "Well come here and I'll tell you."

  • Yep. I would have been pissed. I would have waved him over and told him his question was inappropriate.

He had someone else sharing the counter with me so even if I called him over I still would have had to say it in front of her.

I feel like this happens very often at Targets because I remember a few times of them yelling the name of LO's or the dog's medication out asking if it was the right one in front of other people. I'm sure the dog doesn't mind people knowing she is on prozac but people don't know my name isn't Hadley.

  • Totally a HIPPA violation.  I would have been really upset.

  • I do agree that it was completely inappropriate and I think it warrants a phone call to the pharmacy supervisor. I don't, however, think that it was an actual HIPAA violation because he did not himself shout out the name of the drug or the indication for others to hear, rather he (inappropriately) asked for you to shout it out yourself and you were not obligated to do so.
I think you could probably call your state Board of Health to consult with them about this to be sure.

  • I think that's very unprofessional, and I don't think it's legal either.  Patient confidentiality?  I could understand him yelling out to double check the patient NAME, but not the prescription.  That's something he should have come back to the counter to ask you.

I see what you're saying, but part of HIPAA is to make a good faith effort to protect PPI (protected patient information), so asking her to shout it out in front of other patients was, IMO, a violation.

OP- report it! Not cool at all.

  • Geez S!!! You are not having luck with public service lately!!!

I hope you called and complained about the massage! If not - then you need to do that AND add this to your list! That is so inappropriate.
