I have known a girl named Aris (Air-iss) for years but never thought about it before. Is it a real name?

I have never heard it myself. So the only thing I think of when I see it is the Greek God of War, but his is typically spelled Ares but I've seen Aris related to him before.

and I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure Ares is pronounced Air-ees and this is pronounced Air-iss...

I have never seen it before. I don't like it because I cannot figure out how to say it by looking at it. I think those names are a PITA.

I knew a guy from Greece who was named Aris (Ah-ris) - never heard of it for a girl.

Good question. I've never heard it as a name but there's a condo development by that name near NYC. It's kind of an unfortunate name, though -- not ugly but said aloud it sounds like "heiress."

I have a Greek friend who has a son named Aris (Ahr-Rees) . I've not heard of it for a girl.
