Pregnant after a Loss

Vitamin D deficiency

Hey ladies! I scheduled routine bloodwork before I found out I was pregnant because I thought I might be having thyroid issues. I was cold all the time, tired all the time, gained weight and had difficulty losing and had difficulty getting pregnant since the loss in February. I went the day after I found out because I figured that if it were my thyroid or anything else, better to bring this info to my first appointment with the OBGYN. Well, my doctor called and said that my thyroid is fine and all my levels are ideal, other than my Vitamin D. I am pretty deficient in Vitamin D. Anyone else have this issue? If so were my symptoms similar to yours?

TIA

Re: Vitamin D deficiency

  • Basically everyone in the northern hemisphere is vitamin D deficient during the winter.  It's pretty easy to fix with supplements though.  I would say sometimes my being tired could be attributed to that, but I also have thyroid issues and anemia, which all can have similar symptoms. I've never been *super* low on vitamin D, so it could be different.

What did your doctor suggest to fix it?

  • Just Vitamin D supplements. I am pretty fair skinned and don't go out in the sun too much, even in the summer because I burn easily. She did say that they are safe to take during pregnancy which is probably even more important since the baby will be sucking the little Vitamin D I do have.

  • I've been taking one vitamin D3 1000 a day along with prenatal and a B50 complex. I am also fair skinned and burn easy. I'm definitely not in sunshine too much either.

  • I'm a FL girl who is constantly in the sun and I too am Vitamin D deficient. I've been taking a supplement since before I got pregnant, my OB told me to continue taking it through the pregnancy. I was always cold but that is the only thing I seemed to feel.

I live in the north and wear sunscreen/stay out of the sun. My Vit D was extremely low. Those were pretty much my symptoms.  While I didn't have trouble getting pregnant, taking Vit D did regulate my cycles. They went from mostly regular but a titch long and heinous to exactly 28 days and much less evil. My doc had me on the mega dose. I need to talk to my OB about it and possibly add more to my prenatal.

  • Interesting, I am just a little deficient but have all of those symptoms normally (well, no trouble conceiving, just wasn't holding onto a pg) and was told to start 5000 vit d from my ND which my OB is fine with.  A friend of mine in the UK was deficient and wad told to take like 20,000 so I'd guess 1 or 2k is fine.  There have been some studies done linking vit d deficiency with infertility and m/c but it has some dissention as well.

Interesting about the cycle. My cycle was regular until a few months ago. My last cycle was 24 days and AF only lasted 3 days which is really abnormal for me. That is why I am shocked that I actually got pregnant this time without trying.

  • After my miscarriage, I read about Vit. D deficiency so I had mine tested and it was low, about 20. They want it about 50 I think?  I went from 1000 IUs that is in my prenatal  and added an additional supplement of 2000, bringing me to 3000 IUs a day. In about three months my level went up to 52. Now I take 2000 a day to maintain this number. The important thing is to make sure you are getting enough calcium if taking extra vit. D- something to do with the absorption.
