Breastfeeding

Have you changed from slow flow to medium flow nipples?

DD is at daycare and apparently she doesn't like some of the nipples I send.  We use playtex drop in bottles with the slow flow nipples. I nurse her at home so I don't know which ones are good since they all look exactly the same and I don't give her bottles.  I'm wondering if I should just move up to medium flow.  DD is 5 months. Has anyone switched nipple size?

  • Unless the nipples are collapsing, there is no reason to switch.  We used slow flow up until he was weaned off bottles.  I'd get more specific info from daycare.  Does she not take the bottle or are they just frustrated it takes awhile to feed her?  Breastfed babies eat slowly.  Switching flows could cause a breastfeeding strike due to preference of a faster flow.

  • We're still using slow flow nipples and don't intend to change them.

  • My weaned 14month old gets a few bottles of cows milk a day mostly to go to sleep and I still use slow flow nipples. The slower the nipple the more like the breast it is.

  • My son is 11 months and still uses the super-slow nipples they used to feed him when he was a preemie in the NICU.  He doesn't have any issues, and he's a very efficient nurser.  I think he's actually able to nurse faster than he's able to finish a bottle.

  • We use the drop ins with the slow flow. I don't intend to change anytime soon. She takes her time with it if she is really mad, doesn't want a bottle, it is too cold, or she isn't hungry. She went through a bottle rejection phase and would take an hour to drink a bottle. We didn't change and now she can down a bottle in no time.
