Georgia Babies

Speaking of gear...

I am wondering if I need to think about a stroller that will accommodate C and the new baby? C will still sit in the BOB at the mall or places where we have to walk a lot or far. He will be 4 within a few weeks of baby 2's birth. Will I have a monkey see monkey do situation? Should I be looking for something that will allow him to ride along. What would you recommend? My original thought was to not bother and just use everything I have but I am wondering if that will blow up in my face.

Re: Speaking of gear...

  • personally, with their age difference, I would wait and see.  its super easy to pick something out once you see how things go.  my first two were only 18 months apart so I NEEDED a double stroller.  But now with the third, Riley was only just two when baby was born, and both Finn and Riley walk on either side of the snap n go and hold on as we walk together.  although.....a double is nice if you're going on long walks.  but I would wait and see, get a feel for how things are going and then decide what you would need.  IMO.

  • I agree with heather in that you might want to wait and see. I had to get a double since Bailey and Bryce are only 15 months apart. The only time Bailey rides in the double BOB now is when I'm running with them or at disney world when he gets tired. Anywhere else he walks usually EXCEPT the doctor's office. If I have to take all 3 to the doctor's office I'm not quite sure what I'll do. Bailey will not walk into a doctor's office. I don't really blame him considering how many times and how much he's had happen to him over his 2.5 years.

  • Yeah, I didn't bother with a double because Geneva walks everywhere. She was 3.5 when Cecil was born.

  • I think the easiest thing with a new baby would to be to use a carrier (I liked both my Mei Tai and Ergo). Even with just my DD, I found it the easiest way to get from point A to B. And it would give you to free hands to chase C! I still use the Ergo occasionally, especially when traveling. And the Mei Tai on the back when hiking or walking.

  • I would take the wait and see approach BUT I would go ahead and shop around now.  The double stroller thing was way more overwhelming than any other baby gear item I had ever purchased.  I made the wrong choice first... went with a Joovy (which Gavin HATED).  Luckily I bought it off CL and put it right back on CL (even made a profit- ha!)  But at least if you already know which ones you like or don't like, you can just run and grab one if you decide you need it after the baby is here.  Or you can also watch the prices so after the baby comes you know where to get it cheapest.

  • I would wait and see but have your mind on something you may want if it turns out you need one.  Benjamin and Noah were 20 months apart and for the first few months, it was great but then we didn't use it for like a year and I ended up selling it a few months after Benjamin turned 3.  We just didn't need it anymore since Benjamin walks everywhere.
  • We had a monkey see monkey do situation.  When it occurred, I'd throw the baby in the bjorn and toss the 3 year old in the stroller.   Worked out fine.  I'd wait and see.
  • Thanks! I have been looking and then stopped b/c it seemed overwhelming and then ridiculous to buy a stroller for a 4 yr old to prevent a possible temper tantrum. I will casually look and then wait. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  • I think we are going to wait. Max will be close to 3 when #2 is born.

  • I've been thinking about the same thing. We have a Phil and Ted without the second seat. We initially bought it because we planned to have the next LO closer together and would definitely have needed a double stroller. but that didn't happen. Now I hate my Phil and Ted and really want a new single stroller. Dh thinks we just need the second seat and it will be fine but he isn't the one to try to unfold and refold that stupid thing all the time. We'll see who wins. :) I really want a City Mini single and then will just do what the others advise about the carrier for the baby. Or a City Mini single and the second seat for the Phil and Ted in case I need the double sometimes. Owen still likes riding in the stroller so it concerns me a little on the tantrum potential.

  • Thrilled that you mentioned this.  Adelaide will just barely be 2 when William is born and I've been looking at getting the City Mini double, but having a hard time justifying the cost if it won't be used.  I hate to wait because they are on sale right now.  Such decisions!

  • Lauren was almost 4 when Ryan was born and I never got a double stroller. I almost bought a boogie board but it wasn't necessary. At first, she wanted to ride in the stroller because Ry was but I just explained to her that she had to walk. She got over it pretty quickly. Of course, she had not used her stroller in years. You could also look into getting a boogie board attachment for your stroller.

  • Finn is 3 years 1 month older than Lila, and I was not going to buy a double stroller. We tried out the standing board for the bugaboo and he hated it with a passion, I have no idea why. Well, when she was about 6 weeks we ended up buying a City Mini double because I try to walk with them every day, like 3 miles, and there was no way he would walk with me. If we didn't do that I probably wouldn't have bought one, he never goes in the stroller, except when we travel, but that is only because we convinced him there is a rule he has to go in a stroller at the airport and for some reason he believes us. But even then I don't bring the double, I wear Lila and he goes in the stroller.

I highly, highly recommend getting a carrier to wear the baby. I wear Lila all the time and it helps tremendously, then Finn can go in a cart or whatever.

P refuses to sit in the stroller.  I'm afraid my BOB days of running at the park are over.  :(  I thought I could at least get this coming summer out of it since it was about the only thing we did last summer, run then play at the park - but I am worried she will just continue to protest loudly and given Isaac's energy I am worried he will want to be in the stroller either.  Besides, she is kinda squished in there anyway.  So I think you should W&S but it may be that I can loan you mine if you really need it.  But I'd invest in a good scooter or training wheels (and a helmet) for long walks or park days rather than a double.  I think that is probably what we will be doing.

  • I'd definitely wait and see, with that age gap you will probably find you rarely, if ever, are going to need a double!  Maybe someplace like Disney, but it's super-easy to rent a double City Mini there (we did that for the boys last fall), but otherwise you'll probably wait to go places like the mall when C is in preschool :)  Ethan is a few months younger than C even, and he has not ridden in a stroller in a year probably, I have sold all my doubles and only Lauren rides.
